It snaps app that allows creators to monetize short videos. The company announced a new monetization program that will allow influencers to monetize Spotlight videos of one minute or longer by earning a share of their content's ad revenue.
The change will facilitate monetization features in Snap's in-app Spotlight and Stories, introduced by Snap for the first time feature. It also means company its Spotlight Rewards Program, a creator fund-like arrangement that pays creators directly. The program will end on January 30, 2025, with the new monetization arrangement taking effect on February 1.
Snap announced the update as TikTok nears an outright ban in the US. The ByteDance-owned service currently faces a January 19, 2025 deadline to sell or be banned. does not interfere. In its announcement, Snap notes that Spotlight views are "up 25% year-over-year" and that "there is a unique and growing opportunity for creators to monetize this format in the same way as Stories."
Under the new "unified" program, creators can monetize Spotlight videos or Stories if they meet the following requirements:
- Have at least 50,000 followers.
- Post in Saved Stories or Spotlight at least 25 times per month.
-Write on Spotlight or Public Stories for at least 10 of the last 28 days.
-Achieve one of the following in the last 28 days:
-1 million Spotlight views
-12,000 hours of viewing time
Some of these figures are slightly higher than Snap's previous ones for Stories that set a total of 10 Story post levels per month. However, as TechCrunch notesthe new threshold is higher for Spotlight creators, who previously could only earn money from the company's creative pool with 1,000 followers and 10,000 unique views. The change also encourages creators to create longer content for Spotlight, as they can no longer charge for videos shorter than one minute.
If TikTok is banned, Snap will be one of several platforms trying to attract creators to its product. While the app is primarily known for its private messaging features, the company says the number of people posting publicly has "more than tripled" in the past year and will "enhance and expand the overall rewards available to creators." it goes forward.
