After starring in "Barbie" and "The Fall Guy," Gosling would be the first actor to join the galaxy far, far away in Levy's as-yet-untitled film.

Shawn Levy recently found commercial success with 2024's “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and it looks like he's looking to repeat the magic in a galaxy far, far away. That will be no easy feat, as there hasn't been a "Star Wars" movie in theaters since 2019, when "The Rise of Skywalker" ended the 9-episode Skywalker saga that began in 1977 with "A New Hope."

Levy's "Star Wars" film was first announced in 2022, and his "Project Adam" collaborator Jonathan Tropper was set to write the screenplay. It is not clear where and when the project was set up, but The Hollywood Reporter revealed that it was to be a stand-alone film when they announced Gosling's casting.

Gosling might actually be a good choice for the role, as he recently finished shooting another space movie: Phil Lord and Chris Miller's Hail Mary Project.

Like many movies and TV shows, Shawn Levy was forced to halt work on his “Star Wars” project due to the WGA writer's strike. In September 2023, Levy revealed that he was forced to take a hiatus from the Lucasfilm project while promoting his Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See.

During the interview in Collider's TIFF Media Studiotold reporter Steve Weintraub, "We were just starting the development process of my movie and the writers' strike happened," adding, "So we're in that holding pattern that so much of our industry is in."

The hiatus also hurt his "Real Steel" series. "Still, as I told you, I want it as much as the fans of Real Steel want it, so alive but stopped," he added.

In a December 2022 interview ColliderLevy revealed that he spoke with the president of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy "for a while" about filming "Star Wars," but admitted that "there's a lot of work" to be done before his script hits the big screen.

“Yes. I'm very aware of the ratio of filmmakers who make it to the starting line. As you know, Steve, I'm a business student, and of course I notice,” Levy said at the time. "But here's my attitude: I have this golden ticket to a galaxy far, far away, and I'm going to dedicate myself to developing the script that gives me the privilege of making this movie."

“I don't get attached to things because it looks good in a trade announcement. I get attached to the things I intend to do. And you better believe that I won't waste this most juicy opportunity," he continued. “I will do my job. But first I had to work hard to make Deadpool. So it's definitely long-term planning, but I want to be one of the films to get to the starting line because those are rare opportunities and I want to make the most of it.”

“I've been talking to Kathy Kennedy for a while now and she's been aware of my passion for this franchise for a long time. The stars finally aligned, and she came to me and said, let's do something here,” he added. “And that's as far as I can tell. But this is definitely a development and not close to being ready yet. So there is still a lot of work to do.”

In an interesting twist, Ryan Gosling almost starred in "The Wolf Man," the latest monster movie from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse. There were a lot of changes made between the announcement of the film and its release, including a change in director.

Although Gosling is still credited as a producer, his lead role as Blake was eventually awarded to Christopher Abbott of "Kraven the Hunter" and "Les Miserables" fame. In an interview with CinemaBlenddirector Leigh Whannell revealed that the changes in the lead actor came down to scheduling.

"It's almost the same thing. It was really, you know... when I was working with Ryan, it was a similar story that you see now. It was isolation, the same characters. It's just been so long. There were those strikes and everything. these things happened," explained Whannell. "All of a sudden Christopher Abbott's schedule changed and he brought this to life better than I could have hoped for."
