The element of the sudden onside kick was removed, ushering in an energetic kick-off. Teams must declare their intention to kick an onside kick and can only attempt it in the fourth quarter. Entering Week 15, only 3 of 41 onside kicks had been recovered.

NFL chief executive Troy Vincent said the competition committee may have to consider the option of resuming on-field kicking because it has become a "dead end."

"I think everything has to be on the table," Vincent said. "Five or six years ago, when we adjusted kick-offs, it also affected side kicks. In the past, you would have overloads, offensive tackles, trap interceptions in the game, and it was a very dangerous play. You could set people up We would say failure.

"I think you have to look at all aspects. You should be able to do that in any quarter. It's not surprising. I think all these things have to come back to the table. We should explore. Our efforts should make every game a success. Be a competitive game, including games in the first or fourth quarter.
