Ryan Gosling will star in Sean Levy's Star Wars film

This is no drill: Ryan Gosling ("Barbie," "The Falling Man") is coming to a galaxy far, far away. While much remains unanswered, the Oscar-nominated actor is currently in talks to star in one of Disney and Lucasfilm's upcoming Star Wars films. According to The Hollywood Reporterannouncement reports that Gosling is being sought to star in Sean Levy's upcoming film set in the legendary sci-fi franchise. Whether you feel good or bad about this, it's a big deal.

Levy's mysterious Star Wars film first began development in 2022 and is said to be working on the script alongside Jonathan Tropper, with whom he worked on Netflix's The Adam Project. Initially, it was reported that the film could go into production after he finishes his duties on Deadpool 3 aka Deadpool & Wolverine. Given the success of that film, now the biggest R-rated film in history with more than $1.3 billion to its name, it's likely that Levy's Star Wars project has moved up the priority list. According to THR, Gosling's interest only furthered that. Now it will likely be the next film in the series to go into production as early as this fall.

Plot details remain under wraps, but the report notes that it's intended to be a standalone adventure. So that rules out that this is related to the new Star Wars trilogy developed by Simon Kinberg ("Dark Phoenix", "Star Wars Rebels"). It's also unclear who Gosling will play. Levy is also set to produce the film through his 21 Laps production company alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

The future of Star Wars comes into focus

The last film in the franchise to grace the silver screen was 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. Although it was a financial success, it ended the sequel trilogy on a mixed note, having to follow a middle entry that was constantly divided. "The Last Jedi." Since then, Lucasfilm and Disney have developed many Star Wars projects.with only Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian and Grogu making it to the finish line. The film, which is set in the same universe as Disney+'s The Mandalorian series, hits theaters in May 2026.

Gosling is one of Hollywood's biggest stars, and "Barbie" ranks as one of the biggest movies of all time. The actor earned an Oscar nod for his work as Ken in the film, which only added to his star power. Some of his other notable credits include La La Land, The Notebook and Blade Runner 2049. Coupled with Levy's ability to evoke more audience satisfaction, it certainly makes this an attractive combination in the eyes of Disney and Lucasfilm. Star Wars could use some surefire hits right now.

In addition to this project, "Clone Wars" maestro Dave Filoni is developing a movie that will connect all the series in the "Mandalorian" universe. James Mangold ("Logan") is also working on a film that will show the beginnings of the Jedi order. Plus, Daisy Ridley is set to return in a film that will show her building a new Jedi order after the sequel trilogy. Whether all of them will cross the finish line or not remains to be seen.

As for how soon this film could see the light of day? Originally, two Star Wars movies were supposed to arrive in 2026. However, Lucasfilm has taken the December 2026 film off the calendar, but the studio is maintaining a December 2027 release date for the mystery title in the franchise. We'll see how things shake out.

Sean Levy's Star Wars movie doesn't have a release date, but stay tuned.
