Gundam is one of the longest running sci-fi franchises since 1979. Mobile suit GundamAnd in that time, it has been filled with different timelines, but there is one that stands out among the others, for good and for bad. From War Gundam X It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, exploring the franchise's themes of war and suffering in a different direction, after the damage has already been done. On paper, that sounds like a great canvas to paint another sci-fi series on, but in practice, every good idea is immediately ruined by the worst pacing and final disaster in franchise history.
Post-apocalyptic Gundam
After the war Gundam X From mercenary Garrod Wren embarks on a simple rescue mission to save Tifa, a young girl, but given so little information about her, you can spot one of the twists a mile away. Sure enough, Garrod joins Tifa's team, the Vultures, after their client tips them off. Innumerable is a regular start. AnimeBut the bigger issue is that even a mecha war about to blow up a nuclear plant can't beat the painfully slow motion.
There's no plot between the competing factions trying to rebuild civilization, and while the Vultures are interesting characters, it takes more than a dozen episodes to get there. From War Gundam X Eventually, it begins to introduce Newtype into this alternate universe, about humanity and the nature of governance, and about the franchise's main rival philosophies, but by the time that happens, many viewers have long been disillusioned. The back third of the 36-episode series kicks into overdrive to make up for the good parts of the story and cram in 12 episodes, but not enough to redeem the show.
Short and underdeveloped
Cramming several episodes worth of character development, revelation, and mecha combat is incredibly boring, and clearly wasn't the original plan. Plots are not developed, but there is a conclusion, but only to accept the darkness and anger of the world. It ends on the hopeful, uplifting note of other Gundam shows. Garrod, Tifa, Jamil, Enil, Roybe, none of the characters From War Gundam X Fans of the best characters from the franchise are featured, and the Gundam models, including the GX-9901-DX and its moon-based satellite cannon attack, fail to leave much of an impression on fans. As a result, this is one of the most obvious entries in the long-running franchise, underrated. Befitting his status as the forgotten black sheep of the franchise, From War Gundam X It's not streaming like the others on Netflix or Crunchyroll, but it's free on Tubi, so at least it's cheap to watch.
