The New York Post reported that the landlord sent the building manager to collect $24,000 in back rent from Sandra Coto-Navarro and her husband. Authorities later found the manager's body, beaten and wrapped in garbage bags.

according to PEOPLEJose Portillo's colleagues alerted the police on Tuesday, January 14, around 5:00 p.m., after they could not return from Navarro's apartment. Navarro said he gave Portillo $23,000 earlier that day, and left shortly after. However, police say surveillance footage showed no sign of the building leaving Navarro's home.

Authorities reported a strong odor of bleach at the scene, along with a map and bloodstains near the bed and dresser. The New York City Medical Examiner's Office revealed that Portillo suffered multiple head injuries, a stab wound to the neck and cuts behind the knees.

According to The New York Post, Sandra Coto-Navarro was home alone during the deadly attack. Police initially questioned her husband, but released him after examining evidence that confirmed he was not present at the time of the incident.

Sandra Coto-Navarro was indicted on Thursday, January 16, on charges of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and weapons possession in connection with the death of Jose Portillo. Navarro could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Portillo's ex-wife told the New York Post that he was a kind and caring man. "He tried to help everyone. He tried to help them and was killed. It's awesome," Portillo's ex-wife said.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz described the case as a "horrific murder" and is working diligently to bring justice.

“Now, a life has been lost and a family is in turmoil because the defendant allegedly chose to settle the rent issue with violence. This is not the way a civilized society works. The accused will face justice for this gruesome murder." District Attorney Katz explained.
