Keke Palmer opens up about the 'toxic dynamic' between herself and Darius Jackson

Palmer and Jackson, a fitness instructor, reportedly began dating in 2021. She would reveal her pregnancy a year later while hosting "Saturday Night Live."
After the now infamous public shaming on X (formerly Twitter) in 2023 when Jackson shouted star of “True Jackson, VP” over a bodysuit she wore to an Usher concert — “It's an outfit after all… you're a mom” — fans began to worry that Palmer's pairing with Jackson might be toxic.
That assumption would be confirmed if Palmer submitted a restraining order against Jackson later that year, alleging physical and emotional abuse.

"There is (sensationalization) going on with that word," she says. "But there really are often no other words to describe such a toxic dynamic."
Palmer admits that the birth of her son was a wake-up call for her to leave the relationship, "before it had a chance to become something I had to live through."

Keke Palmer tried to find good in Jackson: 'You can find so many excuses'
For years, Palmer says she did everything she could to make excuses for Jackson's behavior — something she attributes to observing others while overlooking her own needs.
"You can say, 'I know you're not like that' or 'I know it's not like this' or 'I know you're a good person deep down,'" she realizes now, adding, "You can make so many excuses for behavior that could have stopped."
Although she is an alleged victim of domestic violence, Palmer was more concerned that Jackson's abuse might lead fans to feel sorry for her - something she never wanted.
"I hated it," she admits. “It was my personal garbage. He didn't deserve a place at the center of something I worked very hard to encourage and empower."

Palmer Reconnects With Scream Queens Co-star Who Called Her 'Martin F-cking Luther King'
Palmer also detailed where things stand after a wave of headlines stemming from an alleged conversation on the set of "Scream Queens," Ryan Murphy's 2015 horror-comedy series.
According to "Master of Me," Palmer's 2023 memoir, the moment occurred after she tried to defuse tension between two feuding white co-stars. One of those stars – whom Palmer renames in the book as “Brenda” – then turned to Keke and said: “Keke, don't. Who are you – Martin F-cking Luther King?”
Palmer never directly identified the person, but says they never apologized. However, they reached out to the actress via Instagram to congratulate her on the book.
"I was like, 'Hey, thanks, that feels good,'" she revealed. “She was just checking her temperature. She knows what she did."
As for Murphy himself who, per The Blastthe one time she yelled at Palmer for taking a previously scheduled day off, the producer has yet to respond to her claims — Palmer doesn't mind anyway.
“I did what I had to do for myself, and it got me in trouble with one of the most popular and successful people in the industry,” she noted, “and sometimes being successful can cost you to do the same thing. '”

Palmer's new film, 'One of These Days', took years to get right
Palmer's life and career challenges have been paramount in her struggle to maintain her vision for "One of Them Days," her first big-screen role since 2022's "Nope."
As co-star and executive producer on the project, Palmer says it took nearly five years of development and four script rewrites before he finally arrived at the finished product—a story based on two friends who do their best to stay hopeful and afloat in a world where gentrification is quickly becoming the norm.
“I had to be really specific about what needed to change,” the entertainer said, “what the jokes were going to say, what story we were telling about where these two characters were coming from. I was more than just an actor playing a role. I really care about the project as a whole.”
More on 'One Of The Days' and Palmer's next role
Palmer's next big role, a dark comedy called “I Love Boosters,” shares a similar theme to “One of Those Days,” but is ultimately about building and sustaining community.
“You can't make the world care about you. You just can't,” she notes. "But if you do your best, you can build a community and fight for the things you want."
Palmer's comedy, “One of Them Days,” which stars SZA in her first film role, hits theaters on January 17, 2025. Watch the trailer above.
