When it comes to comedy TV shows of the last ten years, it's hard to find a more beloved one than What We Do in the Shadows. Premiering on FX in 2019, the series was based on the film of the same name by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. However, no matter how good some things are, they must inevitably come to an end.

On The season 6 finale of What We Do in the Shadows served as the series finalewith the vampires saying goodbye after more than 60 episodes and over five years on the air. However, the decision was made before the start of the season, so this was no surprise to any of the creatives involved, nor to viewers who stay up to date with the news.

Generally, the show documented the nocturnal exploits of vampires Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo (Matt Barry), Nadia (Natassia Demetriou), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksh), who try to make their way through the modern world of New York. with the help of their human friend Guillermo (Harvey Gillen), as well as a vampire bureaucrat known as the Guide (Kristen Schaal).

For what it's worth, the show didn't dip in quality, based on the general consensus. /The film review of What We Do in the Shadows Season 6 called it "bloody good fun". That begs the question, why would FX decide to end a show with loyal fans that was still critically acclaimed? The answer is simple.

In short, the series simply ran its course. Granted, American television is notorious for letting shows go past their prime. It's the creative equivalent of wringing blood from a stone big time. It's just the nature of the business. (Not everything can be Six Feet Under.) However, in this case, FX decided to let the show go out on its own terms before overstaying its welcome.

"The show has come to a natural conclusion. It's been a great six-year run," FX president John Landgraf said at the TCAs in February 2024 (via Screen Rant). Similarly, showrunner and executive producer Paul Sims addressed the show's cancellation during a New York Comic-Con panel in October 2024. As Sims explained, according to The Hollywood ReporterThe Shadows team would rather go out on top than overstay their welcome:

"I think it's better to come out on top, and it's better too early than too late." I don't want to stay long enough for this auditorium to only have a few people in the front. I mean, just look at how many people are here.''

The Sims also made it clear at the time that they weren't going to leave audiences with any cliffhangers. "It's all in Season 6. Everything we've ever wanted to do is there," he said. There's nothing worse than a cliffhanger, so at the very least, fans of the show got some closure.

The good news is that this franchise has more to offer viewers. First of all, the movie that the series is based on is truly wonderful and those who haven't seen it would do well to check it out. In addition, there was a relatively short-lived spin-off series with the title Wellington Paranormal which originally aired in New Zealand and later came to the CW and Max. So for those looking to fill the vampire-sized hole in their hearts, that might be a good place to start.
