Movie audiences on both sides of the ocean seemed better off watching Robbie Williams"biographical film",Better Man,” during opening weekend.

The glossy biopic, which deals with the fast and rocky life and career of the "Rock DJ" artist—albeit with Williams portrayed as a CGI monkey—failed to attract fans, grossing an estimated $10 million worldwide on a reported $110 million budget.

In the days and weeks leading up to the release of Williams' "A Better Man," critics hailed the project as one of the better biopics in recent memory.

Directed by Michael Gracey ("The Greatest Showman") with Williams himself narrating an extended account of his life story, the film was noted as innovative and entertaining, in part because its very human subject was presented as an anthropomorphic ape (Williams explained in several interview that the animal is often the way it sees itself).

A great review of "A Better Man" by Liz Shannon Miller, Senior Entertainment Editor Consequences with soundnotes that the film is one that "(preserves) the musical biopic."

"Taking a 'Paddington' approach to its protagonist immediately imbues the film with a cheeky energy," she writes, "an energy that even newcomers to Williams' story will find very appropriate."

A great example of the goofy yet impressive vibe of "A Better Man" is found in a scene that thematized an early point in Williams' long career.

After gaining an influx of new fame with Take That, the boy band that gave Williams his start, the group launches into a spirited rendition of “Rock DJ”, one of the singer's most notable hits, set in London's famous Regent Street.

Although only a minute of the scene is available online, Consequence's Miller says the entire sequence is simply one of the best offerings in cinema in 2024.

One common thread as to why Williams' "Better Man" failed to connect with American audiences is that he is a singer is not that famous here as elsewhere.

On X, several users said they weren't surprised to learn that the film brought in about $1 million in the US in its opening weekend.

“Does anyone in America even know who Robbie Williams is?” one person asked.

Another user X shared: "A biopic about a singer who is far from a household name in most parts of the world, portrayed as a pale CGI chimp, doesn't work - what a shocker!"

Kat Blaque, a YouTube personality and entertainment commentator, reportedly promoted the statement about Williams' lack of American notoriety. In a short video On a longer take on a separate topic, she responded to followers who called her out for stating that America, as a whole, is unfamiliar with Williams.

"We simply don't know who he is," she clarified via text. "I honestly thought ('A Better Man') was a movie about a monkey who became a pop star with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda!"

While there is some truth to Williams being the bigger draw in the UK, he has had some success on our shores.

In 1995, Take That's single, “Back for Good,” reached No. 7 on the BillboardHot 100 chart. It is now considered a staple of American adult contemporary radio.

About four years later, Williams' solo hit, "Millennium," would be pushed as the first single from "The Ego Has Landed," a compilation for American audiences featuring songs from Williams' two albums. It would peak at number 72 on our shores – an admirable feat for music released before the streaming era.

The second single, the ballad “Angels,” would become Williams' highest-charting American offering, peaking at No. 53 on our shores. Five years later, in 2004, singer Jessica Simpson covered the inspirational tune for the reissue of her LP 'In This Skin'.

To help promote "Better Man" in America, Williams appeared on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" via satellite, where he performed "Rock DJ".

He was also shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Original Song - "Forbidden Road" from the movie "Better Man". Unfortunately, he was disqualified for "embedded material" from another song unrelated to the project.

While the exact date is uncertain, reports state that Williams' “A Better Man” is slated to air on Paramount + on or around February 11, 2025 (since the film is a Paramount release).
