"Only Murder in the Building" is a pleasant mysterious show for three incredible friends who come together to solve murder in their apartment building. In Season 1, the play was firmly focused on Arconia's inhabitants, introducing us to a fun team of eccentric Newujorers who played mainly-not-us actors. However, until Season 4, the series was almost focused on celebrities, with actors like Eugene Levi, Zack Galifianakis and Eva Longoria, starring as themselves.
Great celebrities also played original characters, like Paul Rudd played the victim of the murder Ben in Season 3. Kumail Nanjiani played a suspicious neighbor in Season 4 in a similar way, while Molly Shannon showed an eccentric Hollywood producer the same season. That's the usual trend in TV: as the show grows more popular, adds more famous names of its roles. But after you get the A-list stars to join your series, how do you raise the rod from there?
Talking to Hollywood reporter"Only the Murders" director Tiffany Mala Canfield explained how she felt about the growing focus on the show's celebrities. Asked if she felt any pressure to "surpass the antetet" with casting in every new season, she replied: "Absolutely, I think we all feel that pressure because we want the audience to be so jumped when they start watching the cast. I think it's part of it."
The only casting director had several white whales in mind
It is difficult to deny that the casting of celebrities has helped to keep "only murder" in the spotlight. In the lead of each new season, there will be a series of fun titles on how this and that celebrity will play a potential killer. It is fun to learn that actors like Christoph Waltz or Kigan Michael are joining the show (since they are both in season 5), which also means they can get a chance to use it in the final of the season with a malicious monologue.
Asked if there is casting "white whales" for the show, Canfield replied: "We already got it! Meryl." Indeed, Meryl Streep wasn't just as wonderful as well as the long -running theater actor Loretta In Season 3, but her current romance with Oliver (Martin Fort) has made a fun story in Season 4 and I hope she will do the same in season 5.
Kanfield also gave Daniel Day-Luis as another great actor he would like to throw, though he said "it seems impossible because he has retired very publicly." But given that day-louis recently non-pensions Starwar in the upcoming directorial effort of his son Anemone, " Maybe this dream of Canfield is not completely dead.
Fans have their white whales for the series. If you go to the "only killings" sub-season during the off-season, you will not see a lack of people who publish how a celebrity should totally join the show. "Only Murders" may not include their team to the same extent as Other franchisees for murder-myrys like "knives outside" or "White Lotus", But his random maintains similar excited energy when discussing casting opportunities for each new installment.
Did the cascap of just murders go too far?
Although the constant casting of celebrities has created a lot of buzz for the show, not every "only murder" fan is happy for the trend. Especially until the 4th season, many people were frustrated by how far the original inhabitants of Arconia became bypassed. Outside Howard (Michael Cyril Kirilton), almost every Arconia character introduced in season 1 has been reduced to a few short ranks in the season or completely cut off from the show.
Some of this feel like a natural result of the series trying to keep its formula fresh. After Season 2, the show's writers seemed to realize that it would be repeated (and something impossible) if the killings were around Arconia's residents, so seasons 3 and 4 focused on the killings of people who do not live in the premises. This is good that the series does not have to explain why Arconia's residents are not terrified of their neighbors dying like flies, but it is also bad that those characters feel more and more tangential to the main stories. Because of this, seasons 3 and 4 lacked that pleasant, communal sense for previous seasons of the show.
Season 5 seems to have referred to this appeal, citing casting of celebrities (at least a little) and returning the mystery back to Arconia itself. It is a shame that longtime Leicester (Teddy Koluka) had to die for the show to finally pay the attention he deserves, but if nothing else, this means that the show can return to its roots properly.
"Only Murder in the Building" is transferred exclusively to Julu.
