In the late 1980s, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese made a fascinating exchange. After years of sight, Spielberg decided it was time to devote himself to the "List of Schindler", which he had previously offered to direct. For his part, Scorsese agreed to rewrite Cape Fear instead (Spielberg considered too violent for himself), saying it is a good way to return universal to his faith after Controversy over "the last temptation of Christ". Both films would undoubtedly look very different, and the alternative Chinese reality does not end there.

For his modern update to the thriller of J. Lee Thompson of 1962 for a wicked sex offender, as a lawyer for a lawyer and his family, Scorsese initially wanted Harrison Ford to play Sam Bowden, the lawyer in question. Ford was more interested in playing against type as a villain, however, and lowered the movie when he couldn't get the role she wanted. A torn and heavily inserted Robert de Niro stepped into the shoes of Cady instead of earning an Oscar nomination in a movie so iconic that he got his full episode of "Simpsons" fraud. Also, receiving the Academy Award was Juluuliette Lewis as a 15-year-old tear Daniel Bowden, a part that could land very differently if Reese Witherspoon did not throw out her audition.

Beatspoon has since reached an Oscar -winning recognition, Singing her way to the best actress for "Walking in the Order" and getting an extra nomination for "Wild". Speaking to Jimi Kimmel in 2023 about how terrible the audition at the beginning of her career, she remembers reading the key teenager in Cape Fear, saying:

"I didn't know who Robert de Niro was, so I was standing out with the receptionist and she was like:" You know he is the most important actor of our time? "And I was like ... I was 14 years old, and I never saw Goodfellas and I never saw him" godfather ".

She did not get the gig, nor Moira Kelly, Martha Plimpton, Ferjuza Balk and Drew Barrymore. The part was eventually given to Lewis (then 17 years), who was actually the first young actor of the audition. Let's look back at Scorsese's Cape Fear and speculate whether he would work with Whitrspoon playing a non -so -called teenager who attracts the eye of the bathtub.

Based on D.N D.'s novel. McDonald's "The Expecters", and both versions of Cape Fear follow the same basic story. Max Caddy (Robert Michum/Robert de Niro) spent time behind sexual assault bars and blames lawyer Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck/Nick Nolt) for his prison. Stunningly, Caddi also used his time in jail for self -education, learning the law to know how to stay only the right side of it, when he begins to pamper and intimidate the Bowden family after his release. However, Cady is not only satisfied with Sam's retaliation, as he is planning to break his wife (Polly Bergen/Esessica Lange) and his daughter (Lori Martin/Ietuliet Lewis). This threat attracts Bowden on the dark road, as she feels forced to perform more illegal methods to warn Cady.

The original version of J. Released in the early 1960s at a time when sex and violence were generally understood than shown, the film generated its tension through Thompson's tight direction, Michum's non -haul threatening performance and Bernard Herman's wicked result. Although the word "rape" was omitted from the script, the film was still problematic for censorships due to "the continued threat of sexual assault on a child", and Thompson was required to make significant reductions to avoid the terrible Certificate in the UK.

Martin Scorsese's remake strengthened the sweaty southern Gothic atmosphere and turned it into a complete psycho-thriller. Interestingly, Wesley Strick's script also mixed the characters to make Bowden more malfunctioning this time around. Replacing Peck's typically restrained lawyer, Nolt's version is a frightening lawyer who retained evidence to send Cady - perhaps understandable, but a decision that still puts a questionnaire to his morality, especially since his marriage is also prompted by things with other women. Upgrading Martin's girlfriend's type, neighborhood, Daniel of Lewis is a similar troubled teenager who has been cracked at a drug use school and feels misunderstood by her parents. Hence, under such circumstances, there are already cracks in the Bowden family unit that Caddi is trying to use, not only when it comes to targeting Daniela.

Three decades after the original, Martin Scorsese's "Cape Fear" was not supposed to keep and the director could show Max Cady in brutal action, especially in the shocking scene when he attacks Sam Bowden (Ileana Douglas) and bite him. But even that is not the most disturbing moment of the film. That honor falls into the long sequence where Cady, presenting as a new Daniel drama teacher, attracts her to a dimly lit audience of school and begins to seduce her. After he worked in her self -esteem, he made her suck her thumb before kissing her.

The scene is disturbing at many levels. It shows how cunning predator as Cady can play the child's insecurity, and we are afraid of Daniel's safety, after seeing how wicked he is in the previous attack. The difference of the glow of the age between Robert de Niro and Ietouliette Lewis makes sexual prevails very unpleasant, to say at least. He called for a young actor who could hold against the Oscar -win legend, and Lewis once recalled her first meeting with De Niro (through Los Angeles Times):

"It was in my favor because I knew it was not a normal situation (De Niro), interviewing young girls (...) I could say that he was a little unpleasant. I mean, all the other girls got in with their mothers. So I said something to ease him. Film-on-week I did. "

On Luis's credit, her reactions to the thumb incident (which Scorsese and De Niro kept them as a surprise until the filming) sold the tricky moment. It works so well because Lewis has always gravitated towards darker material, and her performances since she was younger (see also: "What does Gilbert Grape eat?" And "Natural Birth Killers") had a street edge that suggested that she was growing knowing everything about the unfortunate side of life. In contrast, Reese Witherspoon's early career was typified by a bright and windy face-two-shell person, giving the impression that he is someone whose childhood has spent without the world. Throwing that kind of innocence in danger in the hands of Max Cady might have been a step too far for the movie, so maybe it was a good thing that she didn't go through.
