Lil Dicky is truly an artist for the internet age. The rapper rose to fame with hilariously clever videos for songs like "$ave Dat Money," not to mention his incredible freestyle performances. The rapper, whose real name is Dave Burd, has also proven to be a pretty great storyteller on his FXX comedy series, aptly titled "Dave." Premiering in 2020, the show featured a fictionalized version of the artist known as Lil Dicky, loosely inspired by his real life. It was an instant favorite of critics and fans.
Unfortunately, the series met a somewhat unceremonious death as cross-country tour that was "Dave" Season 3 proved to be the show's last - at least for now. In February 2024, FX confirmed that a fourth season was not in the works. This announcement came a full nine months after the series' third season finale. As for why? In the statement at the time (via The Hollywood Reporter), an FX spokesperson said:
“After some back-and-forth, there are no current plans for a fourth season of 'Dave' at this time, as Dave Burd has decided to take an extended hiatus to focus on music and other endeavors. That doesn't rule out the possibility of doing something in the future. We are excited that our partnership with Dave will continue as he develops future projects for us through his overall production deal with FXP.”
On the contrary, the most important thing is that the brass in FX do not exclude something in the future. The show is not canceled in the traditional sense. "Justified" ended after six seasons in 2015 only to be revived eight years later in the form of Justified: The City of Origins. so who knows what the future holds. For now, however, Burd has moved on to other endeavors.
Lil Dicky had other things he wanted to do besides Dave
Apparently, Burd's desire to do more with his music and other creative endeavors is the only reason "Dave" Season 4 isn't happening. This was only confirmed by Burd himself, who made the following statement when it was announced that the show would not be returning for a fourth season:
“Making 'Dave' was and continues to be a dream come true. But there are other creative endeavors I'm dying to pursue. and after three incredible seasons, it's a good time to hit pause to give myself the bandwidth to do some of the other things I've always wanted to do in the future, and I'm very grateful to FX for their continued partnership.”
The third season of "Dave" deals with the concept of fame and what it does to a person. Undoubtedly, if time had not been an issue, Burd and FH could have digested many ideas for at least one more season of the show. Creatively speaking, the show certainly didn't take a dip in Season 3. But Lil Dicky has a huge following. Making a new album and touring that album, for example, takes a lot of time. That doesn't leave much room to make a television season either, especially when the artist in question is the main star, executive producer and writer of the show.
It is not unlike how Saturday Night Live host extraordinaire Justin Timberlake must balance his music career with acting. He still makes music, but also finds time to act in movies like Trolls and Reptile. It's a champagne problem, sure, but time is a finite resource. Hopefully, once Burd tackles some of these other ventures, the door to a return to "Dave" — or maybe something else entirely — will open once again.
"Dave" is now streaming on Hulu. You can also purchase the soundtrack for the series through Amazon.
