Alien: explain the new Siam on Earth

This post contains spoilers For the premiere of two episodes of "Alien: Country".

The latest issue of the Alien Universe is not short on jargon. The series, Interruption tied by the ground Appropriate entitled "Alien: Earth", it begins with a significant vocabulary on the screen that contains three types of future humanoids found in this world: "Synthes", "Cibori" and "Hybrids". Screen titles do not stop there; During the first episode, they introduce the USCSS Maginot on Weyland-Yutani Corporation Maginot, series of dates and measurements relevant to the mission and a new environment for the franchisee, the MegaCorp Prodigy-called "Neverland" research island.

Finally, viewers are introduced to the Newoo Siam, a place we are told, is also called City Prodigi. The city immediately looks known, despite some automation, there is still a clear human touch missing from other areas of Alien: Earth. We see colorful, busy streets and a floating transport system that is purely retro when it is contrary to the advanced surveillance of Prodigy and AI technique. The pre-technocratic name for the area has never been spoken in these episodes, but context indications suggest that the new Siam can only be one place: Bangkok, Thailand.

Corporate ruler Prodigy took Thailand in an alien: Earth

Even if you've never seen Bangkok's unmistakable city landscape, the origin of Newoo Siam is obviously thanks to his name. Thailand was historically called Siam, especially by foreigners and History today notes That the name, initially Sanskrit, probably gained popularity when used by 16th -century Portuguese colonizers. In Noah Holly's dystopian vision for the future, the region is also colonized, but this time it is controlled by a corporation - a harlot. In an interesting inversion of Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner", what did I have a future Las Vegas under the great influence of TokyoHolly imagines in a world where a bright, popular Asian city has spent American greed.

Although the specific government structure of the city has not yet been explained, an exciting part of the pilot's exhibition sets the foundations for the world version managed directly by companies. Prodigi, driven by a boring, rich boy from a strange Cavalier (Samuel Blankin), owns the city formerly known as Bangkok. Despite this, the spirit of the city shines in the early scenes showing its moving, clear human attraction. How Wrote the Hanh Nguyen salon After the visit set, "removing the space from the" Alien "equation meant that Holly had to predict what the Earth 2120 looks like, and apparently, part of it looked like Thailand."

The 22 -century land is a capitalist hell

The newly established part of Prodigi over the city is obvious when we get to know the privatized military group that Medicit Hermit (Alex Lotter) is unable to leave. It is also referred to a holiday called "Founder Day", and until we see many festivities, Cavalier has been told that the USSSS Magin-Space-owned Corporate rival Jutani-Revented in a Kavalier-owned building, while most of her tenants were on the festival. Recall, a white man who looks like twelve to own one of the largest port cities in the world, the whole army, a bunch of tall, private island built for Dr. Moro-style experiments and Timothy Oliphant's bleached eyebrows.

In a classic 1% fashion, Cavalier's boundless wealth does not translate to prosperity or access to the people of the Newoo Siam. He clearly does not care about the potential victims of the spacecraft and wants to look at the Sotan samples, even if the search and rescue team or any number of civilians should die on the road. In a special retrospective, Hermit and others are forced to come face to face with dusty, hostile document processing machines in a DMV -shaped nightmare office, the one that seems to be designed to leave everyone who enters the feeling of powerlessness. Under the thumb of Cavalier, Thailand is far from the idyllic nation Porced earlier this year in "White Lotus".

With only two hours of storytelling under the belt, it is already clear that "Alien: Earth" has something even frightening of Xenomorph: a dark accurate vision of what capitalism can look like in a hundred years.

New episodes at the premiere of "Alien: Country" on Tuesday at 8 pm ET of FF and Julu.
