In an exclusive interview with Dr our weeklyThe 31-year-old tennis star explained how she has learned to shut down social media criticism over 15 years into her professional career.
"People have no filters," says Stephens, who spoke to us through his partnership with Daily Harvest. “They don't understand that you are a different person. They will never say that to your face. It actually prevents people from putting their lives out there because they don't want to be judged."
Stephens added, "It's about what the athlete can handle, right? 'Should you retire?' I'm like, 'If these people are still paying me, I'm not going.' I think people don't understand, if somebody pays you a lot of money, you don't quit your job. You don't quit your job."
Ultimately, Stephens explained that he was in his "I won't give like—" phase.
"As an athlete, you have such a tough skin," says the 2017 US Open champion. “For bettors and people who are literally like, 'You should have won, you bitch.' So when people comment on my post, 'Why are you posting this?' This is my page. Get the F-off."
Although Stephens is proud of the well-worn armor, he admits how "younger athletes haven't experienced it."
"I'm like, 'Oh, whatever,'" she said of her social media mindset. “If I post and you don't like it, follow someone else. unfollow me block me Do what you need to do. If you feel secure in your world and your life and your tennis or whatever, you don't react as much to what other people are saying."
