This article contains spoilers for Superman.
The Jameseshei Gunn's "Superman" is a Love -Board to many previous character incarnations, with much influence withdrawing from different epochs of comics. But also requires many signs of Richard Donner's original film "Superman" in 1978 - A movie that Gunn said had had a huge impact on him as a child on several occasions. You can see that impact on things such as Superman of David Corensvet, which values your whole life (even saving small animals in the middle of fights), the camp nature of some of the story and dialogue, and the back and back between Clark Kent and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnakhan). Unfortunately, Gun's film also makes a character from the movie '78 incredibly dirty.
Yes, I'm talking about Eva Thesmacher, a girlfriend of Lex Luthor, played by Sarah Sampaio in the 2025 film. Eve is not of comics. Instead, it was created specifically for the film in 1978, not in full unlike Charlie Quinn was created for "Batman: the animated series". In Donner's film, Valerie Perin starred, and if you didn't know, let me be the first to tell you: she's an amazing character. While playing clearly in the "Stupid Bimbo" archetype, it is constantly on Lex, saving the day by saving Superman (and, uh, kissing it non-convensual, but more about it later), and it turns out to be immensely capable.
The version we get in Gun's film somehow feels more backwards than the one we got 47 years ago. It's an insult to a great character and honestly, it's one of the weakest parts of the new Superman.
The original Eva Tesmacher is an icon, ordinary and simple
To talk about Eva Tesmacher, we must talk about Bimbo as a cultural idea. It is very written Over the last five years about the feminist renewal of the word, which, through the forward social media platforms, such as "Titel", has introduced a new, progressive definition that fits hyper-financial intelligence, liberation and strengthening. As Laura Peter wrote for Cutting In 2021
Eve may not suit all those qualifications, but it will advance under the modern banner. Not all her writing is maintained, I'll give you, but her contributions - and for the wicked plan of Lex and Superman's heroic - they are never played as accidents. She is fully aware of the type of man Lex, and never misses the opportunity to put him in his place. ("When I was six years old, my father told me ..." Lex begins a boring disc. "" Exits? ", Eve suggests, cutting off it.)
The US army's debt of the film quickly moves away from the performative Bimbo Huba of Eve, and when the incompetent Otis (Ned Bitty) is knitting with one of Luter's patterns, Eve is withdrawing and doing it. Superman's sexual harassment? It's not a fan, obviously. But it was 1978. We must allow at least some growth space.
Superman of the Jameseims Gun, which could have been a triumphant return for Eve
Given the history of her character and the modern traps of more progressive writing around the archetype, Eve was to be a great addition to The Superman of Jameseims Gun. Instead, she played for a repeated joke that made no sense. Jimi Olsen (Skiller Gysondo) has some romantic history with her, which allows a suitable plot to happen, but it is never explained to any degree. How did they meet? Why is he obsessed with him? Why does he find it so incredibly grotesque that it simply meets it, should be avoided at all costs?
Her worst offense throughout the film is to be disturbing - a trait you expect to play for unused laughter in, say, 1978, but now? Even when it saves the day with a selfie barrage that houses classified lively Intel in the background, she never gets an appropriate loan to help prevent the villain's plans. She doesn't get any real agency - we just hear jokes about how much everyone is hated (and her "mutant fingers") for the fifth time. It's a character written by Facebook posts on your sexist uncle - a kind of empty tract of "selfie and makeup are stupid" without a twist.
The lazy do not begin to describe it. This is a loss of character who could have been fantastic in 2025. Sampaio does his best with the material, but the script does not favor them, and Eve winds are the least sensory device of the film and the most embarrassing joke. In the year of our Lord 2025, Eva Tesmacher deserved much better.
