Halloween may be in the mirror, but the bonkers horror comedy has been part of Netflix's top ten for much of December, and may just be the weirdest success story of the month. The dead do not die. It's not like a straight zombie comedy. Shaun of the Dead And it manages to go further than just a funny zombie movie. Fido With twists you can't see coming. Of course, they're impossible because director Jim Jarmusch upends the expectations of a typical zombie movie and replaces it with a bitter, sardonic black comedy that you wouldn't expect from such a star-studded cast.
Small town zombie invasion
Trying to describe the actual plot The dead do not die. It's pointless. It starts out pretty normal, two cops are investigating a report of a missing animal, and then they start noticing strange things like a watch that suddenly stops working. Background news reports hint at what's going on before the zombies rise from the ground and start eating the residents of Centerville.
Then an easy start. The dead do not die. It quickly shakes uncontrollably, shattering the fourth wall for a brief, well-earned moment of hysteria. The two Centerville officers, Cliff and Ronnie, are played, respectively, by Bill Murray and Adam DriverI didn't know I needed to see a movie pairing before this movie, but now I do as one of the greatest cross-generational pairings of all time. No matter what's happening around them, Murray and Driver maintain the same deadpan tone from start to finish, like how Farmer Miller shouldn't have been warned about zombies or how Ronnie has an affinity for Mexicans.
It defies every zombie movie trope
The dead do not die. He knows a lot about zombie movies, and expects the audience to know them too, which makes it all the more satisfying to check out the details of every single song in the movie and how it's flipped. Usually, you look for the most famous person in a movie and you think they'll be perfect, but the cast is stacked from top to bottom; In addition to Leader and Driver, it stars Danny Glover, Austin Butler, Selena Gomez, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Steve BuscemiRosie Perez and Carol Kane. For music fans, Iggy Pop, RZA, Sturgill Simpson and Tom Waits round out the impressive cast.
Netflix's top ten usually includes the latest original movie that's being heavily pushed by the algorithm, a big new movie or two, and usually a current movie. It's like a movie that's not normally seen, and especially not seen for more than a week in five. The dead do not die. That would be described as "weird" by your average moviegoer. The reason I bring up the fourth wall break is that it's not even the weirdest thing that happens during the movie, and after watching it again, I'm even more impressed that it's so popular because it means you have hope. Average Netflix The subscriber has really good taste.
