Lionsgate rapidly expands the Won Vic universe. "Ballerina", aka "ballerina: From the world of Johnon Wick, is now in theaters and serves as the first theater spin-off in the very successful franchise for action films. It is not the first spin-off in general. That difference goes "Continental", retrained TV series, has once called the producers "ingenious". It turned out to be a great swing and miss, kind of existing as often ignored grandchildren of the universe right now.
The series takes place in the 1970s and focuses on a young Winston Scott (Colin Woodel), the character played by Ian McShein in the films and shows us how he came to control the Continental Hotel in Newoufor, a well -known safe shelter for assassin. On paper, it doesn't sound like a bad story of storytelling. Execution, however, has left much to wish. /Calls the movie Ereeremi Matai "Continental" A "lifeless, joyful and ultimately meaningless" spin-off in his review.
Talking to Hollywood reporter In honor of the announcement of "Ballerina", the franchise Shepherd Chad Stahelski, who directed all four films "Johnon Wick", spoke sincerely about what happened to "Continental". So what went wrong? Here's what he had to say about it:
"Keanu and I were - I would be say sidelined, but our opinion was Heart and not really noted. But if you take out Basil iWanyk's Producing Intuitiveness, if you take out Keanu's Way of Delivering Quirky Dialogue and If You Take All the Visuals I Have in My Head from Wong Kar-Wai, Anime, Leone, Ber. (Bertolucci) or Andrei Tchaikovsky ... Then it's not the same thing.
Continental was not made on withhone wick
As Stahelski sees, the team that is at the essence of these films is what makes "Johnon Wick". That is not to say that Reeves should be in every project and it is not to say that Stahele's should necessarily direct every project. But the studio will at least do good to listen to them, given that they are the ones who saved "Johnon Wick" from being exempt from direct-video and turned it into a mass franchise.
The signs were there when it comes to "Continental", which first entered Starrz's development in 2018. The five -year waiting period and changing networks certainly did not inspire confidence. It turns out, there were many reasons not to be confident. Speaking further, the Stahelian offered a larger window in their creative process, which was very different from what was done with the unfortunate spin-off series:
"If you saw our process, you will be like",You tell me this franchise of billions of dollars Does this way? 'I look at my next movie in London and we saw a cool location yesterday that completely changed the second act. We reworked all the work. I find great members of the cast and constantly process their parts. This is what makes (movies) so good and organic - we are constantly upgrading. But the studio wants to know what they get for their dollar and want to conclude a script for budget reasons. While we say, "Just write the check, we'll see you in the finish." "
Stahelski is looking for a lot, but many would say he earned it. Hook, He even got in to deal with the "ballerina" reshuffles when Len Wisman couldn't be there. And in early walking, at least, the audience responds well to the film, which looks and feels much more like something than the Johnon Wick Universe than "Continental". Lionsgate is unlikely to make the same mistakes to move forward again, very sure.
"Ballerina" is now in theaters.
