After actress Williams received an Emmy in 2019 for her role as Gwen Verdon Phos/VerdonSinger Williams said she received multiple comments from confused fans.
"When you're tagging and congratulating someone, how do you know I'm black?" said the singer via Instagram Live. "When you go to my profile, you search for 'Michelle Williams,' I'm black. OK? I'm not mixed with anything; I'm Persian, not mixed with Russian, I'm black."
During her Emmy speech, actress Williams spoke about equal pay in the industry, for which singer Williams said she received criticism online.
