Christmas movies are feel-good, heartfelt movies about the true meaning of Christmas, or a small-town girl who moves to the big city to become a high-powered lawyer and must return home and find her old high school for some reason. They crushed the grown-up and carved Santas out of ice from Sweden and captured the love of Christmas. But one Christmas movie stands alone, and for 40 years nothing has come close to the perfect mix of yuletide joy and dark comedy. Gremlins. The 80s horror-comedy is still a part of pop culture today thanks to the villainous Gremlins, but what makes the film unforgettable is its dark and haunting single.
Roasted Santa Claus
Gremlins It tells the story of Gizmo, Mogwai, who was given to Billy Peltzer by his father as a Christmas present, and who breaks the first rule of "don't get wet" passed down to his father by the mysterious Mr. Wang. Hordes of evil gremlins wreak havoc on the town of Kingston Falls. But no matter what the evil Streep and his gang do to the townspeople, from crashing the venerable car into a bedroom to turning a chair lift into a launchpad, nothing compares to the horrific accident Billy's friend Kate shares a little halfway. Movie.
Played by Phoebe Cates, years later Fast times at Ridgemont High Scene, Kate to a Single words When her father disappeared when she was nine years old. Christmas passed, and the family had no clue where he was. A few days later, they lit a fire in the fireplace, and the smell alerted them that something was wrong. Her father tries to go down the chimney dressed as Santa Claus with presents, but breaks his neck and dies in the chimney. The story hinges entirely on a monologue that Kate seems to struggle to finish once she starts. Maybe not the place, but it's the perfect summary. GremlinS Black humor.
The thin line between sad and funny
I heard this story for the first time while watching it. GremlinsAnd I've been concerned about it since then, but it was before the movie. Ever since Coca-Cola created the modern Santa Claus, Santa's tales have continued to be told, and some of the tales are sad, like Kate's, while others make fun of big men who need to be rescued. Director Joe Dante tries to make this story a backdrop for Kate and Christmas in bed with her PSDD in the middle of the movie, but it's perfect for the movie because people can laugh at the horror and get some dark entertainment out of it. Getting out of it, but if it happens to you, it will be very sad.
Dancing between comedy and horror like no film before it. Gremlins He pushed the envelope so far Indiana Jones and the Temple of DoomThe MPAA created a PG-13 rating. Not only do most of the deaths occur off-screen, but only 15 people die in the film, most of which are nameless backstory additions. You could argue that the scariest moment of the entire film is the death of Kate's father, who only wanted to make his daughter happy and paid for it with his life.
A kind of Christmas movie
Joe Dante's masterpiece has stood the test of time thanks to the sheer risk he took in bringing the script to life. Home alone And Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Director Chris Columbus, brought to life by Steven Spielberg's production company. Gremlins It's such a singular success that Dante never wanted to make a sequel, and when he did, he made the most absurd, bonkers, franchise-killing movie possible by jettisoning black comedy for straight-up slapstick comedy. Gremlins 2: The New Batch It's an amazing movie and remains one of my favorites to this day, but it's also very light hearted.
Gremlins It might not be what comes to mind when you think of '80s Christmas movies, but it does. Die hardbut has been a Christmas classic for decades. Just be careful when watching it with kids because Santa breaks his neck in a chimney because of violence or murder.
