Spoilers for "X-Men" to follow.

2024 was the first year of the relaunched X-Men comic book line, From the Ashes, detailing mutants once again revert to minority status after losing their nation of Krakoa.

The main Ashes series are X-Men (mainly by writer Jed McKay and artist Ryan Stegman) and Uncanny X-Men (written by Gail Simone and primarily drawn by David Marquez). In their latest installments, the two series come together for the first Ashes crossover, titled Raid on Greymalkin.

"X-Men" follows Cyclops and Magneto who lead a mutant colony in Alaska, while "Uncanny X-Men" is set in Louisiana. The Uncanny team (Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Jubilee) mentor young runaway mutants called The Outliers. It's not just the weird outliers who are going back to schoolas Greymalkin is a mutant prison made by Xavier's former school for gifted youth.

Members of both teams are captured (Beast for the X-Men, Jubilee, and an Outlier called Calico for Infidel) and imprisoned, so both teams attack the prison. The Raid began in X-Men #8and continued in Uncanny X-Men #7 when the two teams collided in the middle of their simultaneous strikes

Part 3 (of 4) is the upcoming "X-Men" #9, for which Marvel shared an exclusive preview with /Film. The synopsis of the release reads as follows:

"Rug and Cyclops come to blows as emotions come to a head, pitting both groups of X-Men against each other in a place where their only chance for survival is to stand together." Xavier's dream is shattered - and the broken edges always draw blood.

When Uncanny X-Men No. 7 stopped, both teams had to stop their match as Greymalkin sent out their A-Team. Namely, some recruited mutant prisoners - the Blob, Wild Child, and Sirin, Banshee's daughter - and several dog-shaped Sentinels called "Bloods". The summary page of X-Men Vol. 9 grabs the reader:

The next page throws us into the battle, with five bar-shaped panels, slanted in close-up, all showing different parts of the action to convey the hectic scene. The top panel shows Cyclops on the left side of the frame, blasting an enemy with his red optic beams. The panel shows Rogue, set on right side of the frame, hitting one of the Bloodhounds. Cyclops and Rogue are fighting the same fight, yet they are on opposite sides.

On the next page, Jubilee and Gambit exchange some spikes with Temper (who in the previous issue lost hers while fighting Wolverine). Juggernaut battles the Blob, while Wolverine (in a panel bathed in red) stabs the Wild Child.

The next page cuts back to Cyclops and Rogue fighting the Bloodhounds, while Outlier Deathdream - marveling at how Magic took Sirin down two sides earlier - says he likes her style. Naturally, Team Goths agree.

The review ends there, but the battle - and the Raid on Graymalkin - certainly doesn't.

X-Men #9 is scheduled for release on December 25, 2024.
