The European Commission has brought a case over the UK's treatment EU Failure to conclude bilateral investment agreements with citizens and six member states.

The first complaint dates back to 2020, and legal proceedings were put on hold to build confidence between the two parties. But on Monday, the commission said it would take the matter to court.

The ECJ could rule on cases before 2021, when the UK's transition period after leaving the EU expired. The UK will have to follow its own rules.

Reacting to the move, Downing Street said: "We are not going to comment on legal proceedings. It relates to the time we were an EU member state and during the transition period.
