A Gurgaon woman recounted a harrowing encounter with an Uber driver that left her terrified and prompting a hasty retreat home in the wee hours of the morning. The incident was shared on Reddit by user kushpyro1, who posted a screenshot of the driver's disturbing conversation.
In his post on the r/gurgaon subreddit, the user described his anxiety while preparing to board a train. "I'm shaking as I write this. I have a train in an hour, and God knows if I'll get there on time," they wrote, explaining that they had booked a Priority Sedan taxi to the Station.
As the driver was approaching, the user decided to verify the OTP and opened the Uber chat, where he found a strange message from the driver. The screenshot revealed a brief exchange: the rider: "I'm here. Anand Vihar Terminal alight. Please come," to which the driver replied candidly: "Go to Anand Vihar. I'm happy to go to the hijack."
The user expressed her panic, "I don't know what impulse came over me (at 4am, barely sleepy and panicked after reading a text from a guy seconds ahead of me), but I thought. cancel the cab." When they started canceling the ride , the driver did the same, asking the user to escape with the luggage in. They managed to take a screenshot before canceling.
While many Reddit users were concerned about the post, some suggested it might be a case of autocorrect gone wrong. One user commented: "Looks like autocorrect went wrong. Good thing you got another taxi. That was weird," while another speculated it might have been a translation mishap, adding that the sentence didn't make much sense.
Uber's response
In a follow-up post, the user noted that they tried several translations to clarify the driver's message, but found that "kidnapping" was the only accurate translation of the word "apaharan."
The user reported the incident to Uber's Response Team, who assured that the driver would be indefinitely banned from accepting or viewing ride requests. "We will contact the driver to understand the issue from his perspective. Disciplinary actions may include making the driver aware of the impact of his actions/words or terminating his Uber account," they added.
