Richardson Hitchins says he wants to make the first defense of his IBF light welterweight title against Devin Haney in the future. Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) thinks a fight between him and Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) will be a big deal on the PPV because of those involved and his father, Bill Haney, there is a lot of bad news to get. boxing fans interested.
Last Saturday, Hitchins eliminated IBF 140-lb champion Liam Paro (25-1, 15 KOs), beating him by a twelve-round decision on December 7th at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The Phrase
According to Hitchins, Haney told him in the past that if he got a world title, he would fight him. Now that he has the belt, he wants Haney to back up his claims. However, Devin's father, Bill, announced today that he will be on hiatus for a year and will not be returning to work for a while. He says Devin wants to take a break.
It has been seven months since he lost to Ryan Garcia on April 20th in twelve rounds, and it is believed that he will sit out and wait for his suspension to expire before fighting him. Haney doesn't take chances by being busy, he might get punished. That would ruin things for him against Garcia.
Hitchins should look the other way because Haney will NOT fight him. If he can buy a washed up George Kambosos, that won't be a bad fight. The little 'Emperor' hasn't done anything since his victory over Teofimo Lopez in 2021, which proved to be a one-hit wonder. However, he can still talk about his fights and his Aussie fans will always follow him.
"I like Devin Haney. I think it's going to be a great PPV fight. I think the numbers will be good because a lot of people will be in," Richardson Hitchins told Fight about wanting to fight Devin Haney next.
“You talk a lot of s***, and Devin's dad (Bill Haney) talks a lot of s***. I feel like I'm the better hero. Before I won, Devin said to me, 'Get a belt first, then we'll fight.' Now I got a belt. Why not fight the world champion? If he stays at 140, why not fight me?
“Let's fight hard. On a business note, though. That fight will make more sense in another fight or two, but I'm down to work now. I want it to be the same size. I am a world champion who has tasted success at the highest level when it comes to sports.
“Now that I'm a world champion, I have something to bring to the fight-making table. If that doesn't happen, the unification with (WBA light welterweight champion Jose) Rayo (Valenzuela), Teofimo or other fighters is a great fight.
“George Kambosos is a big name and a guy who talks s***. We buy the fight. If they can make it happen, that's it," Hitchins said.
