Leonardo Mosquea (16-0, 9 KOs) had too much fire for Chevron Clarke (10-1, 7 KOs), knocking him down first and pulling out a 12-round split decision win just. won the EBU cruiserweight title available on Saturday night at the Salle des Étoiles, in Monte Carlo.
Mosquea, 30, jumped Clarke early in the first round, connecting with two left hooks that put him on the clock. That match led to Clarke's fight, as he showed no interest in facing the younger, faster and stronger Mosquea.
In the championship rounds, Clarke's corner tried to rouse him to go fight Mosquea. He couldn't. Clarke tried to drop his hands in the 11th, but some nasty left hooks from Mosquea left him reeling. After that, Clarke played it safe and boxed, moving for the final round to defeat him.
The scores were 117-113 for Clarke, 116-112 and 115-113 for Mosquea.
