Last week I received a question from the reader, which resulted in a good discussion, so I thought I would share with you here! They wrote:
"I think I know what to do with training, but nutrition? I'm not sure where to start."
Don't worry, I have you! πͺ
In Nerd Fitness we can see that most of our clients fall into one of Three Starting points when it comes to nutrition:
π₯¦ Option 1: Changes based on habits (about 50% of people)
We choose one A small habit-how food is eating during breakfast or preparing a meal-and laser we focus on this one change for several weeks and follow how it goes.
When it is solid, we add the next one. Slow and stable, but extremely effective.
β Ideal for: people who want to build balanced habits without overwhelming.
Of course you can think: "It's great, Matt, but What habits do I actually start with?"
It differs from a person based on your current nutritional patterns, your goals, etc., but Steve and I gathered βRecommended sequence hereβ. Of course, like the pirate code, think about these less similar rules, and more like the guidelines.

π½ Option 2: Sustainable plate method (about 25% of people)
This is βVisual way of structureβ Your meals aimed at:
- ΒΌ of the plate protein
- Β½ Vegetables or fruits
- ΒΌ carbohydrates or starches
- Healthy fats upstairs
It is flexible, so in different situations it is a bit easier - regardless of whether you cook or eat outside. Probably the biggest challenge related to this type of tracking is that you have many large "one pots", in which all ingredients are mentioned together. Although we have βLittle tricksβtoo.
β Ideal for: people who want structures but do not want to track numbers.
π’ Option 3: Calorie and protein tracking (about 25% of people)
This includes recording meals and pursuit of specific goals every day.
We usually suggest to start with simply βproteinβ AND βcaloriesβ To make it easy.
β Ideal for: people who like data, structure and choose things exactly.
This is the thing:
The best option is the one that fits You.
Some of our clients go through all three over time.
Heck, I had customers, starting with habits, and then use the plate method, and then decide to follow a little and then return to the habits.
All these frameworks are only tools - so we want to choose the right one for work (i.e. the one that suits you best!)
π§ If you are not sure where to start, try Changes based on habits First.
But if it seems too free or too vague? Cross a different approach!
-Matt
