This is clear what happened here, because Michael Chavez was assigned to directors for "Conjuring: The Devil made me do it" in 2018 before La Lolorona came out. Jameseims Van, who directed the first two films "Conjuring" and produced "La Lorona", made a statement about Hollywood reporter:

"While working closely with Chavez on the" Curse of La Lorona ", I met him as a director. Chavez's ability to bring emotions to the story, and his understanding of mood and scare, make him perfectly fit to direct the next movie "Conjuring".

Chavez will also continue to direct Nun II. And the "Devavol made me do it" and "Nun II" were more familiar with "La Lolona", which deals with 6.3/10 and 5.6/10 at IMDB, respectively.
