The director of the naked gun talks about “rules” fraud and the funniest moments of restart (exclusive interview)

Well, that's why I want to get specific. Talked to Dan Gregor and Doug Mand about Sequence of the snower's hut, which is just like a show -shows sequence. I laughed so much. I know you said that the idea just appeared in your head early one morning, but I was iousubopite if there were other drastic versions on that scene before you had that idea and what they were?

That's a great question. We definitely wrote some other edits, but I don't remember what they were. They were good, but none of them felt different enough. It is not different enough from the old "naked gun", but only different from all those who have fun with the edits that have happened in the last 30 years. It is well worn territory. The first "bare gun" is classic, and then there are many others. The one that always comes to mind is like a "team of America", "you need mounting". Like, after they have the song to talk about it, they really broke it. I wish to remember, but I don't remember others. There was no debate. After I wrote it, we were all like, "good".

One last bit I want to talk about is Tivo Bit, which feels so personal and specific, and just comes out of nowhere. What was the beginning of that?

It's so funny "The reason in some of these interviews, I talk a lot about intensity and how the film just had to move, and how if the joke didn't work, I would always shorten it. Even the things that went further, as we sometimes reduced the last rhythm if it climbed into one part. That's just me.

It's the only joke that still makes me laugh. I've seen the movie a thousand times, he examined every frame. It's all like those and zeros for me now with color and sound and mix. None of that makes me laugh more. That joke still makes me laugh every time. It was always polarizing. Half of the audience would be like: "Don't touch it. That's the best joke in the movie." And half of the audience would be like: "Take it out of here. I have no idea what it was."

So good. Especially the silence there, when it is like, "hold", and he hangs it and waiting to raise it.

Yes, "just stop there. Just stop there." I think even for people who don't like it, if they watched the movie another way or two more times, now they know it, I think it will become their favorite joke.
That's how much I believe it.

I had to tell Liam, "No, I know that not - it only plays for half of the audience." It's just my favorite and I like that we don't explain it. I think there are a lot of people, too, when he is in (...), when he is in the cabin, after driving the cabin, and he has Tivo, there are people who laugh there and I go like, "I think there are some people who just see how they try to understand where it goes and what it is like, because I don't recognize it." That's Liam's performance that kills him.

Absolutely.

He's just so dedicated. So I think those people will then laugh from the beginning the next time. You know what I mean? But I have to admit it was complacent. I know.

The naked gun is now playing in the cinema.
