It is a very rare moment of empathy towards Rick, because it allows someone else, specifically another version of himself, to get the life he wants to have. Even just a season ago, Rick would kill Rick's memory rather than allow someone other than him to be with Diane again. Even if the "Rick and Morti" approach is never to allow continuity to take away from a good independent story, the show has definitely developed and changed with Rick.
