In the episode "Star Trek" "Smelli" (October 27, 1966), the USS company radiates a planet that mysteriously has the same continental schedule as the Earth. When Kirk (William Shatner), Dr. McCoy (Dergost Kelly), Spack (Leonard Nimoy) and Jooman Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) descended to investigate, they find a burnt, post-apocalyptic wasteland. The only survivors are children, and Kirk will eventually learn that all adults on the planet have been deleted from a fatal virus before. The virus also turned the adult crazy, and they turned to hunting, hunting and harmed uninfected children on the planet. The children remember this time and came to see all the adults as evil and untrustworthy, calling them "flu", short for "adults".

The same virus, as an unwanted effect, also slowed the aging of children, so they have been children for more than 300 years, cannot grow or become wise. However, they will eventually hit puberty and when they do so, the virus immediately infects them. The world dies, and only the bitter children, gathered in cults, remain. Their food supplies are reduced, and everyone is likely to starve within a year. Oh yes, the crew of the company was infected with the virus the moment they went down, so they should beat the clock to find a vaccine. It's a pretty dark episode.

"Smelli" ends when Kirk convinces a young girl, the titular smell (Kim Darby), that childhood must end and that adulthood is not that scary. She persuades the children's leader, Jan (Michael J. Polard), that the company's crew is fine. Dr. McCoy, a brilliant doctor, finds a cure for the virus, and Kirk has promised to send doctors and teachers to the planet of the scent to help them become adults. It is a pure end of a potentially sad story.

Readers of "Star Trek" comics and novels know that it was not the end of the story of Smell. A 1989 novel shockingly killed a smell and a subsequent comic book series in 1998 revealed that, despite McCoy's efforts, the plague had returned.
