A24 unicorn's death is a disappointment with the box office, but we need more movies like him

Now we are a quarter of the road to 2025 and things don't look great in the box office. As it stands, the sale of home tickets from home is almost 11% behind this time in 2024, and 2024 was quite far behind 2023 at the moment of the year thanks to SAG and WGA strikes. Needless to say, things don't look great. Unfortunately, despite the premise friendly for the audience and the cast, the "Death of the Unicorn" of the A24 served as the last disappointment this year. However, it is also a reminder that we need even more movies like this.

Directed by Alex Sharfmann, "Death of Unicorn" opened only $ 5.7 million at home, putting it on the number five on the charts. Opened behind The latest horror offered by Blumhouse "Womanna in the yard" ($ 9.4 million), despite playing on multiple screens. So, yes, it's not a great look. But the A24 is likely to be good in the long run, as the creature's characteristic boasts a $ 15 million reported budget.

Meanwhile, ASONESON STATET's "Working Man" opened for better than expected $ 15.2 millionGiving him the number one graph, dethronizing Disney's "Snow White" ($ 14.2 million). There lies the point: at this stage, it is difficult to know for sure that the audience will appear or will not appear. The horror can often be a reliable genre to bet. But just because some of these films are not working, and the studio hoped they didn't mean they could leave such quests. And this goes far above A24.

Hollywood's short -term decisions have long -term impacts

Five years ago, the pandemic closed the cinnamon for months at the endHollywood doubled streaming at an accelerated rate, as studies were facing an uncertain future. The theaters opened in 2021, but unfortunately, the recovery is much slower than everyone expected. There are a myriad of reasons, but it is great that studios simply publish fewer films in cinemas than they were in 2019.

Studies have become more intense about what is a theater edition and what can be better suited for streaming - or what needs to be done at all. The A24 is one of the few companies there regularly announces original projects on the market. It is important because the relief of Hollywood on franchises and IP is stronger than ever. The fact is that we need films like "Unicorn Death" more often, whether they succeed or not in the short term.

Hollywood needs theaters to survive. The industry needs box office revenue, especially since cable television continues to die. DVD is no longer the powerful manufacturer of money that was once. Streaming only now becomes profitable. Without theaters, things are growing. Theaters cannot survive while waiting for the next "Inside Out 2" every few months.

The only way to rebuild audience habits is to regularly publish a wide range of films that can satisfy all kinds of audience members. Original horror movies? Check. Action movies? Check. Adult focused dramas? Check. All this can not be just movies with comics and remake of once favorite favorite. Even Flop as "Mickey 17" had the real ideaIt was too expensive to make a profit.

The death of a unicorn is an investment in the future

"Unicorn's Death" was greeted with mixed SXSW reviews And it did not get up with general film films, but it is a kind of thing that Hollywood needs to do absolutely more: making films with reasonable budgets, great roles and original ideas, with exclusive theater releases. The hits do not come without misses. It is about managing the size of those misses in the meantime, so they are not devastating.

Surely, Maybe something like "novocaine" is not totally to take placeBut it will be good at the end after the line comes into play. Need theaters more I didn't have like that, no less. It is becoming increasingly difficult to predict where the real hits arrive. Just look "Conclava", not just one of the best 2024 filmsBut a clear shocking hit with $ 112 million worldwide to its name. It would be difficult to predict that the film broke out earlier in the year.

Of course, Hollywood needs franchise films to ensure that big hits be provided. But "Johnon Vick: Chapter 4" does not happen Unless the original "Johnon Wick" is made in the first place. Maybe a "working man" can become the next "Johnon Wick". In another time schedule, the "Death of Unicorn 2" could probably have been an outcome. This time did not miss, but rolling those cubes is crucial to the survival of the industry. If nothing else, Hollywood should completely double this thinking instead of withdrawing even more. Making films like this is a long -term investment in the future on the healthy theater market.
