"Death of Unicorn" premiered on Saturday night at the SXSW festival to a live crowd. Every joke, no matter how small, got a big laughter and every time a unicorn killed someone (which often) the audience gave huge applause. The film really lives up to everything that promised marketing: If you want to watch a bunch of nonsense rich people to be killed by a unicorn, this is the movie for you. And if you want to watch the co-lead of Enena Ortega A Again a horror/comedy movieYou'll have fun.
The problem is that the idea that fueled the film - wouldn't it be funny if the unicorn went to the rampage for murder? - is a joke with a limited life expectancy. The news of the frightening unicorn for blood may run out surprisingly, and over time the final act hit the violence with the unicorn has already begun to feel empty. It doesn't help there are not many different ways of the unicorn can kill you (they mostly use the horn), so the film can be seen fighting hard to make all the scenes with death to feel different.
Not only are the methods of unicorn violence not enough, but that the tone in which it is transmitted never changes. This horror/comedy blow is very comedy first, but my heart longed for a large, suspicious piece. Where is the unicorn equivalent of Gail Wayers chasing around College Campus? The film is occasionally flirting with original horror and uncertainty, but never commits more than a few seconds.
Unicorn's death avoids the problem of cocaine bear
There are parts of the "unicorn death" where it seems to fall in The "cocaine bear" trapThe film that thinks that her joke premise is enough to work on its own. "Cocaine Bear" tried an grounded story among human characters to give the bear rampage emotional weight, but because the film was so clearly interested only in the bear, the "serious" story of Kerry Russell was reunited with her children fell flat.
Where "Death of Unicorn" triumphs are with the center of Ridley (ENENA Ortega) and Eliot (Paul Rudd). They are the duo of the daughter/father who start the film in poor conditions and test their relationship even more, as the whole situation of the unicorn is revealed. These two feel realistic and cute, and they are treated with more thinking and care than writers than you expected from this stupid movie. Some of it can frustrate viewers who are simply here for the massacre, but gives the massacre more meaning out of the bloody spectacle.
The other trick used by the film to avoid the "cocaine bear" trap is his story that is pleasing to eat. Unicorns may be those belonging to people left and right, but it is obvious from the moment we meet with a wealthy Leopold family made by a selfish patriarch of a walk (Richard E. Grant), his reckless wife Belinda (Thea Leoni) and their son with high energy.
The death of a unicorn is shining with its performances
More cute characters include a hired scientist at Leopolts, Dr. Batia, played by Sunita Mani. Manny was wonderful for her short role in the "M -robot" (and of course it Music video "Here's what" what "), and it once again leaves a strong impression even though there were no tone work lines. Leopold's High Butler Griff is played by Anthony Carigan, who does not give A. God's Level Noho Hank Comedy performance, but maybe it's an unfair standard to put it. Carigan is still a fun presence during the film, often the best part of any scene in which it is.
Although I have little qualifications to lose weight, this film is so shameless in its comment on the class (and so morally in accordance with its united violence) that it becomes a problem: it is too easy to predict which of these characters will die and who will be spared the narrative. However, there is a noticeable exception, and it makes a fun surprise in the second act. It is one of the few murder scenes that are really shocking in its creativity, at a time when the film becomes.
The best part of this film is of course Will Pulter, too much man-child, who is constantly changing his mind. It is easy to parody the mega-rich unusual, but it is another to do it in the way this is constantly striving. Shefard is a bastard from the rat through and through, but it is funny in a specific, surprising way that sets it apart from the rest of the Leopolts. Maybe it's just a Pulter performance, but it's one of the few parts of the film's directive directive that feels surprising. If only the "unicorn death" had a few more surprises.
