Part of the reason "Bones" lasted so long was because of its unique blend of humor and drama. The show ran for 12 seasons, showcasing an inappropriate but somehow charming mix of humorous banter between its characters with some pretty gruesome crime scenes and depraved serial killers. But while humor and horror were two separate elements, somehow the grotesque bodies of "Bones" were somehow part of the comedy.

Some of the fake corpses made for the show were beyond the stuff you might see in an all-out horror movie. There was fresh bodies on "Bones" that even went too far for the show's producersand One particular body additionally earned Zach Addy actor Eric Millegan. These are just two examples from a show filled with some of the most absurdly detailed antics ever seen on a network show. There was even a crude bathtub scene that had to be cut from "Bones" because of some unbearable details. As such, there was something absurdly funny about the way the "perverts" at the Jeffersonian Institute would gather around casually talking while one of these obscene tables simply lay before them.

Often, however, the show veered straight into nightmare territory, abandoning any attempts at comedy for some raw scares. With that in mind, we took a quick look at the episodes of "Bones" that fans consider to be the scariest of the show's entire run.

"Bones" had its fair share of stand-alone episodes, but there were also longer stories that sometimes spanned seasons. These stories often revolved around Emily Deschanel's Temperance "Bones" and David Boreanaz's Agent Seely Booth tracking down serial killers—the first being Howard Epps (Heath Freeman), otherwise known as The Manipulator. But according to fans, Epps didn't quite match the horror of the Undertaker, who had a penchant for burying victims alive, demanding a ransom for their release, and often simply neglecting to release them even after receiving the money. The killer first appeared in season 2 and was part of the series until season six, eventually being revealed as US Attorney Heather Taffet (Deidre Lovejoy).

During the Redditapparently the fans are thinking the Undertaker episodes "Bones". among the scariest in the series - which is kind of understandable considering how this badass "Bones" actually killed children. One user lists "Aliens in a Spaceship" from Season 2, "The Hero in the Hold" from Season 4, "The Boy with the Answer" from Season 5, and "The Bullet in the Brain" from Season 6 as particularly terrifying parts of Gravedigger.

Based on Redditor's opinions, the only real contender for "Bones'" scariest killer is Christopher Pelant, aka Hacktivist (Andrew Leeds). This serial killer was introduced in the season seven episode "Crack in the Code", where he left a skull and spine at the feet of a statue of Abraham Lincoln. There was also a cannibal killer from the third season, Gormogon, whose story Boreanaz once called it "just bad television." However, even this serial killer was mentioned by Redditorswith one particular jump scare from the third season episode "The Knight of the Web" highlighted as the ultimate scare. It sees Gormorgon jump out of a closet and murders lobbyist Ray Porter, though the killer is eventually revealed to be the Apprentice and not Gormorgon himself.

Aside from The Undertaker and The Hacktivist, some Redditors have pointed to Mihir Roshan, aka The Puppeteer (Ravi Kapoor), as being responsible for some of Bones' biggest scares. Season 11's Big Bad, The Puppeteer is known for drugging his victims with a lethal dose and then using the bodies as puppets. Users cite episodes involving nightmares involving the killer as particularly terrifying, with one Redditor naming a jump scare from such a nightmare as staying with them for a long time. This is a reference to the Season 11 episode "The Nightmare Within the Nightmare", which begins with the squints gathered around the body of a burn victim, who then wakes up before Temperance Brennan herself wakes from the nightmare en route to the crime scene. .

Another one Redditor identified "episodes with the skeletons as puppets" as particularly disturbing. In Season 11, Episode 13, "Monster in the Closet", Brennan reassembles a skeleton before hanging it from the ceiling of the Jeffersonian Institute in an attempt to get inside the Puppeteer's head. This very scene reveals the killer's sickening practice of turning his victims into puppets, and is one of the more subtly disturbing moments in Bones history. Other users also called "Monster in the Closet" as "the creepiest episode ever."

But that's not all Serial Killers "Bones" - which was actually a request from the network - it gave the viewers a good scare, as the show is more than capable of scaring the audience with one-off stories as well.

Serial killers certainly seem to be a fan favorite when it comes to the scariest episodes of Bones. But other users pointed to standalone episodes, such as the second season episode, "The Headless Witch in the Woods." One fan in particular referred to the episode, in which Bones and Booth investigate the death of a film student, as "nightmare fuel". The Headless Witch in the Woods, which takes many cues from the Blair Witch films, is also known for frequently suggesting that the central murder is the result of potential supernatural forces, although this is never confirmed. As such, it seems to have gotten under the skin of some fans who are perhaps a little more sensitive to such things and a little less sensitive to sin.

Elsewhere on Reddituser voted for "every time someone gets eaten alive (or nearly) by rats or dogs," which I think is safe to say is a fair metric to use when rating the scariest episodes. There is also mentioned from "the episode where the girl has all her bones removed" and Jack Hodgins (T.J. Tyne) tries to "blow up her remains to get some kind of advantage." This seems to refer to the season 2 episode "Boneless Bride in the River", where a corpse is found without the skeleton and the squints try to construct their own as a way to reconstruct the boneless body. (I told you this show had some nasty stuff in it.)

All in all, the Bones serial killers are responsible for most of the scares. A serial killer even scared Emily Deschanel herself. But the show has also proven that she's more than capable of chilling us all with her solo episodes.
