"The book was inspired by a lot of journals I kept as a kid, where I wrote about a lot of things I never shared with anyone else," Gage revealed exclusively USA Weekly. "In this book I start to talk about it, and you can see why he sometimes felt safer not to."
According to the Memoirs description, Gage decided to write the book after experiencing "one of the most intense weeks of his life." During this time, Gage's beloved grandmother was nearing the end of her life, and he found himself sitting next to his mostly absent father.
