In a new interview with The sunMike Stock, Matt Aitken and Pete Waterman have criticized singer Sabrina Carpenter's rise in the music industry, particularly focusing on her "sexy" image.

Waterman said he found the singer's wardrobe choice "offensive" and questioned why she chose to sexualize her image when she has the raw talent needed to stand out.

He also claimed that female singers wearing "as little as possible" was not the norm 30 years ago, adding that artists of their era would have been "killed" for doing "half what is done now".

As a follow-up, Aitken commented that seeing Carpenter and other women adopting this style to promote their music is a setback for women's rights.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Waterman also stated that Carpenter's decision to dress sexually could make it harder for her to gain respect.

"It's just crazy. If you're looking to be respected, don't get into the G-wire," he said.

As for Stock, he went after the singer's lyrics, saying she was "lazy" when she talked about sex in some of her songs.

"I would never try to write a text that says anything specific on a sexual level," Stock noted.

He continued: "It would always be allegorical or allude to it somehow. So I don't like that. I think it's a bad show and it's lazy. You're going to get some form of attention with that."

The transition from her previous style reportedly didn't come easily to Carpenter, who grew accustomed to the "wholesome image" she cultivated during her time at Disney.

"She was very uncomfortable because behind closed doors she sweats, wears a little makeup and likes to stay home and watch Netflix," the insider said.

They added: "Suddenly showing skin and flaunting it while singing provocative lyrics was a challenge at first. She had to embrace her acting skills, but it worked."

Another source claimed that the transition was successful because the singer was ready to do anything to get stronger.

"Sabrina knows that she has to just let go and accept that she will have to become a commercial product in order to establish herself," the insider mentioned. "It's no different than what Britney, Gaga or Katy Perry have done. They know what's going to sell and she's going to do it until she's in a place where she's able to give it an edge."

Another insider said that it also helped that the singer had talent and worked with skilled producers who provided her with great songs.

"The producers actually gave her some good music and now she's more grown up, sexier," the source said.
