“Whenever I see Matt out and about or, you know, even with us, if we go to dinner, my husband (Tim Maloney) goes to dinner with him and his fiancee and people love him. Women love him. They're like, 'Man, oh my God, can I get a picture? I love you I miss you on television.' OK?" he recalled. "And so, I think the public loves him. The public misses him, but it's just… people inside the business are afraid."
He added: "There's probably a way that he'll come back, but I think there's people inside the business who are worried about, you know, what happened to Matt."

Lemon said he believes Lauer will have a shot at returning to the public eye if it stays with the public rather than the network and executives.
“I think the public… I'll put it this way. I think the general public will accept — just me — accept Matt. And I think people will watch him and I think the ratings will be great."
