After putting his own spin on one of the most famous vampire stories of all time, the greatest horror in history will go even further into the annals of the past: The Hollywood Reporter has just revealed that Robert Eggers' next project will be set in the 13th century and is due out around Christmas 2026. Of course, this one will be about werewolves.

The film is set to be called Werewolf, and in addition to directing, Nosferatu and The Witch director Eggers is also writing the screenplay with Sjon, the Icelandic poet, author and screenwriter who helped write 2022's The Northman . Despite exploring a more monochromatic color palette with last year's "Nosferatu," THR reports that Eggers has decided to shoot the upcoming film in color after initially planning a black-and-white shoot. It also appears to be returning to its deeply quirky historically informed roots, as the paper's source says the England-set monster thriller will use period-specific dialogue and feature an unusual visual choice: annotations and translations for Old English words.

It's worth noting that people in the time period in question actually spoke Middle English, although it's unclear whether the source was wrong on that point (the two are usually confused). Regardless, it's exciting to hear that the hyper-disciplined and detail-oriented filmmaker will get into the weeds linguistically, because Eggers' first three films (A24's The Witch and The Lighthouse and Focus Features' The Northman) used only realistic (and challenging) dialogue, while his latest film opted to make all the German characters speak fairly modern English. Eggers will once again team up with Focus Features this time around, marking the third collaboration between the director and the Universal Studios division. Eleanor and Chris Columbus are set to executive produce the film alongside Eggers and Sion.

Eggers' latest film, "Nosferatu," has performed better than expected with mainstream audiences, grossing $156 million in the weeks since its release in late December. The film, starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgård, is a moody remake of FW Murnau's famous Dracula ripoff. It divided the critics a bit (currently there are A score of 84% Rotten Tomatoes), but impressed several members of the /film crew, including critic Chris Evangelista. He called the film "scary, sexy, weird and sad all at once" in his reviewgiving it a score of 9 out of 10.
