The latest Ahsoka Season 2 casting rumors could be good news or bad news, depending on where you want the Star Wars franchise to go. If you enjoyed the return of legacy characters like Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker, Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Boba Fett by Temuera Morrisonthen you could be in for a treat. YouTuber and scooper - said Christian Harloff on his latest podcast"I got word that (showrunner Dave) Filoni is really trying to bring this one character back." "I don't think a deal has been signed yet, but it's close and it looks like a Natalie Portman could be back in Ahsoka."
Like Christensen and McGregor, Portman was first introduced in the Star Wars prequel trilogy that ran between 1999 and 2005. She played Padmé Amidala, the young queen of Naboo and eventually the planet's representative in the Galactic Senate. Padme had an ill-fated romance with Anakin that ended with him forcefully strangling her while she was pregnant, and Padme dying giving birth to their twins: Luke and Leia Skywalker. A medical droid states that Padme died because she simply "lost the will to live" - one of the many elements of the prequel trilogy that was very unpopular with fans.
Along with recent rumors that Christensen and McGregor will return for the second season of "Ahsoka".Harloff speculates that the show is possibly doing a "World Between Worlds" type of thing. The World Between Worlds is an alien plane in the Star Wars lore filled with pathways through time and space, and also serves as a convenient meeting place between living and dead characters. In the first season of Ahsoka, Ahsoka spent some time hanging out with her former Jedi Master, Anakin, in the World Between Worlds. It's certainly a convenient storytelling device to bring back characters who have been killed off... but is that what Star Wars fans are asking for?
The reduction in the return of legacy Star Wars characters
While some Star Wars fans might celebrate this casting rumor, it's sure to cause sighs in other areas of the fandom. The most praised releases from Disney's Star Wars era have mostly been those that focused on new characters, such as Rogue One and its prequel series Andor, the early seasons of The Mandalorian, and more. recently, on Amblin's "Skeleton Crew" style adventure. Meanwhile, by far the biggest flop on the big screen was Solo, a film that told the origin story of a young Han Solo (played by Alden Ehrenreich). Since the sequel trilogy ended, progress on making more Star Wars movies has been slow, with a steady stream of projects put into development and then cancelled.
On the television side, legacy characters like Obi-Wan, Anakin, and the deep-fake-faced Luke Skywalker brought brief excitement, followed by a rapid decline. Ahsoka itself is centered around characters from Filoni's animated shows Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, and the first season didn't do much to invest unfamiliar viewers with those characters. If the second season of Ahsoka does end it packs in Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme, there is a risk of further marginalizing the characters who are still alive.
Still, if Padmé manages to give Anakin a posthumous kick, it might be worth it.
