Originally released in 2015, Until Dawn was a cinematic horror game where you take control of a group of characters, where every corner you turn or conversation the player chooses to engage in can affect whether they live or die. and not the single play was the same. It created for one of the best horror video game experiences out there. Now, as seen in Sandberg's first look at the film (embedded above), it looks like a variation on that mechanic has been cleverly implemented in an entirely new story and a completely different environment compared to the game the film is based on.

The original Until Dawn game notably boasted motion-captured performances by Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, and Peter Stormare, the latter of whom is the only returning member confirmed to star in the film version. "Until Dawn" follows a group of friends stuck in a mountain cabin in the snow as different kinds of cold set in. However, in this promo, the footage (which also features interview clips with Sandberg and co-writer/producer Gary Dauberman) includes what looks like a good old-fashioned home that screams "haunted" with no snow in sight. Of course, just because the location is different now doesn't mean it will stay that way.

According to Sandberg, who returns to the horror genre after helming a pair of "Shazam!" movies, "Until Dawn" has a mechanic "that will see characters die and they'll try again." Happy Death Day so far, right? Unlike that exceptional horror-comedy franchise (which mixed "Scream" with "Groundhog Day"), this new film will include a video game feature to reset the characters not only back to the land of the living, but a completely different experience. . "Every time they come back to life, it's like they're in a new horror genre. To survive, they'll have to make it to dawn," added Sandberg.

That detail suggests that the movie is trying its best to match the original game, which brought together a multitude of horror genres and immersed you in them with each character you control. While one wandered through the cabin looking for an unidentified stalker, another was lost in the corridors of an abandoned psychiatric hospital still very much occupied. With that in mind, don't be surprised if things get cold for the film's cast (which also includes Maya Mitchell, Odessa Azion, and Michael Cimino) and, at some point, they all end up in one place that fans the original video game will be very familiar to them.

Until Dawn hits theaters on April 25, 2025.
