The television personality and producer shared the heartbreaking news during an interview with CNN on Wednesday.
"To be 100 percent honest, I took my mom's Emmy, a photo of my dad, and a drawing my mom did of me and my son," Melissa said. Joan, who died in 2014 at age 81, won a Daytime Emmy in 1990 for her talk show, "The Joan Rivers Show."
Reflecting on her quick decision-making during the evacuation, Melissa noticed the unique emotional weight of her choices. “It's amazing what you grab. It's amazing what you take in," said the 56-year-old. “I went to get my mother's drawing rather than a photograph because I know I can find photographs. (Drawing) I cannot replace.”

In addition to these sentimental items, Melissa described working through a "mental checklist" to collect essentials like passports, birth certificates, medicine, clothes and pet supplies. Despite her preparation, she admitted that the gravity of her situation hit her. "I was just shopping for clothes, and it started to hit me that we literally have what's on our backs," she said, her voice full of emotion.
Melissa urged viewers to prioritize critical documents and essentials when faced with an evacuation.

"The most important thing is to have all your 'papers' together," she emphasized. Still, the loss of her home and the widespread destruction left her devastated. "My heart is so broken, not just for me, but for everyone going through this," she said. “It's a city and it's been wiped off the map.”

Earlier this week, Melissa shared an update on social media, confirming that she and her family are safe.
"My family and I evacuated safely and are deeply grateful to be unharmed," she wrote on Instagram. “I am heartbroken by the devastation caused by the fires, which tragically destroyed my home. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the brave firefighters and first responders who tirelessly risk their lives to protect our communities and save lives.”
Melissa's home, a 7,048-square-foot Mediterranean-style estate in Santa Monica, was purchased after she sold her previous residence in Pacific Palisades in 2018. The six-bedroom home was profiled in Architectural Digest 2020showing off its elegant design and personal details.
