Indian authorities arrested a Canadian man at New Delhi airport after he tried to bring a crocodile skull onto his flight.

Details on the crocodile skull found at the airport in India

Delhi Customs stopped 32-year-old Indira Gandhi at the security checkpoint at the Gandhi International Airport on January 6 before her flight to Canada. Authorities initially found the man, whose identity has not been released, "carrying a skull with sharp teeth." per PEOPLE.

in a publication about X (earlier on Twitter, Delhi Customs shared that the item contained the jaw of a baby crocodile. CNN as reported, the Forest and Wildlife Department conducted a forensic examination of the skull and confirmed that it was a baby crocodile. The animal is a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The organization determined it by analyzing the texture of the crocodile's skull, the pattern of teeth, the bony palate and the shape of the nostrils.

The authorities then arrested the man for illegal possession of the skull. In addition, attempting to export a protected wildlife item, and breaching the Customs Act 1962. Also, the Department of Forests and Wildlife took possession of the crocodile head for laboratory testing.

"This case highlights serious violation of wildlife and customs laws," Delhi Customs wrote. "Cooperation between the Customs and Forest Departments is critical to ensure that protected wildlife items are not smuggled."

What's next Crocodile Skull and more information on wildlife trafficking in India

Delhi Customs has started further investigation into the incident. Atul Bagai, the former head of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in India, told CNN that India often deals with wildlife trafficking, and the man's capture has been a huge success.

"India is among the top ten countries in terms of using the airline sector for wildlife trafficking. This is an unsolicited compliment," As explained

CNN says this is not the first time someone has tried to smuggle animals or animal parts through Indian airports. Between 2011 and 2020, airports saw 141 wildlife incidents involving 146 different animal species. Reptiles were among the most frequently found, making up 46% of the catches, crocodiles, lizards, snakes and turtles.
