This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" episode 7, "We're going to be in so much trouble."
Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew Season 1 Penultimate Episode, 'We're Gonna Be in So Much Trouble' returns the action to the planet Atinwith all the stories and characters of the series merging into the mysterious world of myth. As things get going, the parents of the endangered children, Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), Neil (Robert Timothy Smith) and K.B. (Kiriana Critter), plan to send them a message, letting them know how to cross the deadly barrier that stands between them and their return home. Meanwhile, Captain Brutus (Fred Tatassiore), Jodh Na Naud (Jude Law) and the rest of the pirates fight for the children and their ship, the Onyx Cinderella, when they realize it may hold the key to getting through the barrier.
In the end, Jod comes out on top, captures the children by force, takes them hostage with cruel threats, and leaves his pirate crew behind. Reaching the surface, he locates Atin's legendary treasure and the children are reunited with their parents. However, the actual episode ends just as the final conflict begins.
Along the way, We'll Be in So Much Trouble samples everything from Andor to, once again, Treasure Island for ideas. However, one of the best scenes comes right from Steven Spielberg's classic.
Skeleton Crew episode 7 channels ET the Extra-Terrestrial
Skeleton Crew creators Robert Watts and Christopher Ford make no bones about the fact that they were inspired by Steven Spielberg's work, especially his directing and producing work in the 1980s. The Goonies is often cited as a frequent inspirationand it makes sense. "The Goonies" truly cemented the "Kids on Bikes" genre in the hearts and minds of '80s kids everywhere. But there was, of course, another film that really started the genre in the first place: Spielberg's 1982 hit ET the Extra Terrestrial.
The seventh episode of "Skeleton Crew" opens with a scene straight out of "ET" With the parents of the missing children confident that the droids and Aten's supervisors will do nothing to help them find their children, they create their own communication device, lined with spare parts, to send a message beyond the planet's barrier. They gather together in the forest to send their message. Unfortunately, Aten's security droids, who carry bright flashlights at night, descend on them and chase them, hoping to stop their message from getting out.
The scene feels like a direct send-up of two specific, iconic moments in "ET." The first is the "ET" foot chase mentioned in the show before, where the eponymous alien is chased by government agents through the woods at night. with flashlights. The other, however, is when E.T. he assembled his communication device to contact his people and be picked up to go home. "ET phone home," he tells his friends in one of the film's oft-quoted lines.
While Skeleton Crew episode 7 matches the shots and atmosphere of Spielberg's classic with its own nighttime forest sequence, it also puts the adults on the run from the authorities this time around, which is a hilarious switch. Obviously, though, they just want to get their kids home safe and sound, and it makes us wonder if this could be the case for the other aliens trying to take over ET on the other end of things in Spielberg's film.
Will Skeleton Crew end with a thrilling Spielberg-esque climax?
If there's one thing we can learn from Spielberg's Bike Kids movies of the 1980s, it's that they always have an exciting climax with lots of action and, well, kids on bikes. Since this episode of the Skeleton Crew ends on a huge cliffhanger after bringing its young heroes back home to Athens, it stands to reason that we'll probably be back to see the kids riding their hoverbikes as they try to save the day from Jod. Nauvoo and his treacherous ways in the season 1 finale.
Will they fly in the sky and be silhouetted by the moon? That might be a bit much, but I'd still bet that hoverbikes are turning into things. I'd bet on it too Wim will get his hands on that lantern that Jod escaped withalso. It would make a lot of sense for him to become the Jedi he's dreamed of being since the first episode. We're also hoping to see the return of the kid's droid buddy SM-33. It's just good storytelling in the Spielberg mode.
The Season 1 finale of Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew will air on January 14, 2025 at 6pm PST on Disney+.
