What Stargate Universe Season 3 Could Be Like

On his blogMalozzi wrote extensively about the different directions the season 2 finale took before finalizing the version of events we know, with Rush originally intended to be the one awake on the ship and psychologically affected by the experience. This was changed, however, because the implications of a happily solitary, self-sufficient person like Rush who was adversely affected by prolonged isolation were not nearly as compelling as those of someone who actively longed for a sense of community. So Ellie bears the brunt of this sacrifice, and Malozzi suggests six scenarios that could resolve the tension created by the season 2 finale:

#1. PLACEMENT AND STASIS

The simplest solution to the problem is that Ellie manages to repair her faulty pod and goes into stasis, but this event takes place after a time jump of several years. Malozzi talks about the rest of the crew waking up "three to a thousand years later," which could have completely re-contextualized the show's timeline.

#2. CONVERSION AND ISOLATION OF ENERGY

Alternatively, Eli could take advantage of the ship's unique structure by diverting the craft's power into a lone shuttle, which could help him stay awake for three years. While this is a very challenging survival situation similar to that in "The Martian", would make an interesting opener for next season.

#3. ELI'S CONSCIOUSNESS LIVES ON

The ship has a powerful mega-computer, through which Eli could stay alive by uploading his consciousness. This time would undoubtedly be controversial, as it completely changes the way the character is perceived, but raises relevant questions about the existence and survival of humanity.

#4 and #5. OUTSIDE RESCUE OPERATION

What better deus-ex-machina than an intervention from Earth, who could send a rescue team through the Stargate? Since the ship had been off the radar for years, the good people of Earth would probably help solve the crisis, with experts like Samantha Carter or Rodney McKay taking the lead. Conversely, an alien race could stumble upon the sleeping ship and either a) take over the vessel and threaten to eliminate the crew, or b) offer to help recharge the power, allowing Eli to enter the stasis without caring for himself or his crew.

Aside from these Ellie-centric lines, Malozzi also talked about some twists that could be cool, such as the Novans — human descendants who are duplicates of the crew sent back in time — coming to save the ship. "They save us, but their motives turn out to be less than honorable, as it turns out they have designs on Destiny," Malozzi writes, noting that this scenario is one of his personal favorites. While these ideas are now just dreams, it's fun to speculate about a future that wasn't allowed to blossom and is forever frozen in stasis.
