When Rachael Ray first met her now-husband, John Cusiman, sparks didn't exactly fly — at least not in the way one might expect. In a candid reveal on the "I've Never Said This Before" podcast with Tommy DiDari, the celebrity chef shared the hilarious miscommunication that nearly derailed their romantic relationship before it even began.
"The first time I saw my husband, I thought he was gay and I tried to set him up with my friend," Ray admitted with a laugh, according to Us Weekly. "And he said, 'But I'm not gay.'"
Ray's surprise quickly turned to excitement. "Then I said, 'Check, please,' and I couldn't wait to put it in the bag," she joked. "It was (an evening to remember) and he is a very blessed man."

Reflecting on their wedding day, Ray humorously shared an anecdote about Cusiman's unique suit. "I had to buy two suits in different sizes for our wedding from Prada because his jacket was one size and his pants another," she quipped. “I certainly am—I am a very lucky lady.
The two were married on September 24, 2005 in a romantic ceremony held at Castello di Velona, a stunning castle in Tuscany, Italy. The wedding was picturesque, set in the rolling hills of the Italian countryside, and reflected the couple's shared love of food, wine and music.

"John and I have always worked together, but in separate buildings," Ray revealed in an interview with Us Weekly 2020. “John focuses on business relationships and all the different aspects of our brand while I make TV shows in the studio all day. But now we do everything together, which is of course a big adjustment.”
Despite the challenges, the couple discovered a newfound appreciation for each other's roles in their joint ventures. "I think we now have a better understanding of the role each of us played behind the scenes," she added.

The secret of longevity
When asked about the secret of their lasting marriage, Ray emphasized the importance of personal space and mutual respect.
"I'm very crazy, wild, wildly lucky to have my husband," Ray said her podcast "I'll Sleep When I Die". in October 2024. “But he understands that I need my space. He needs space. John and I mostly stay in separate corners.”
But even with mutual respect and space, they are not immune to the occasional heated argument. Ray candidly admitted that she and Cusimano have had their fair share of disagreements, including "huge screams" in the past.
