Acclaimed filmmaker Jeff Brothersbest known for his work on "Life After Beth" and "The Little Hours," has tragically passed away at the age of 47.

Law enforcement sources confirmed that police and fire officials responded to a call to investigate the death around 10:30 a.m. Friday after Baena's assistant found him unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the sceneand authorities later confirmed the cause of his death as suicide.

Baena, who was married to an actress Aubrey Plaza as of 2020, leaves behind a legacy of innovative filmmaking and a relationship that captured the hearts of many – but also provoked intense reactions from some of the Plaza's most devoted fans.

Plaza and Baena began their relationship in 2011 and remained together until his untimely death in January 2025. The couple married in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrating their love in an intimate and uniquely personal ceremony.

"I made a love altar very quickly in our yard. The facts of our love, pebbles, smoke, fire. Things of that nature," Plaza said in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. “Then a man from the Alhambra appeared in a Hawaiian shirt with a briefcase (to perform the ceremony). … I can't remember much, it was vague. But I'm pretty sure it's legal.”

However, despite their evident love and affection for each other, not all Plaza fans supported the union. In the profile for 2022. with CosmopolitanPlaza revealed the darker side of public reaction to their marriage.

“Oh my God. Jeff got death threats in his DMs,” Plaza said. "People project so many things onto marriage, but it wasn't some big statement that I'm trying to make where I want everyone to react to that."

Many of these intense reactions reportedly came from some of Plaza's bisexual fans bemoaning her transition from single to married life.

While details about their early relationship remain scarce, GQ 2022 Plaza profile revealed a charming tidbit: the couple met on Balderdash. Their relationship blossomed both romantically and professionally, resulting in a creative partnership that spanned more than a decade.

Plaza has publicly expressed her admiration for Baena's work on several occasions. In 2021, she shared a heartfelt post on Instagram celebrating her husband's successes. "So proud of my dear husband @jeffbaen for coming up with another movie that takes us to Italy to cause more trouble," she wrote, referencing his film Spin Me Round.

Baena was not only Plaza's husband, but also a successful director, screenwriter and director in his own right. After graduating from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, he moved to Los Angeles to begin his career. He has worked alongside industry titans such as Robert Zemeckis and David O. Russell, contributing to films such as "I Heart Huckabees" and "Meet the Fockers" in 2004.

In 2014, Baena made his directorial debut with "Life After Beth," a dark comedy starring Plaza herself. This marked the beginning of a creative collaboration between the two that would continue through "The Little Hours", "Horse Girl" and finally, "Spin Me Round" in 2022.

Baena is survived by Plaza, his parents, stepfather and siblings.

Aubrey Plaza has not publicly commented on her husband's death until now, and fans around the world have expressed their condolences and supporting the actress during this heartbreaking time.

However, a statement was submitted for Deadline on Saturday he said "the family is devastated and requests privacy at this difficult time."
