Imagine a world where greeting card companies have a disproportionate amount of power over their employees and use their resources to manipulate the masses, one sweet love letter at a time. This is the world that Bob Odenkirk's Ray Wentworth occupies in 2017. Girlfriend's DayA crime comedy that's as absurd as romance. Just like a legit crime drama with dead-on dialogue pressed into play; Girlfriend's Day It's as sweet as a box of chocolates on Valentine's Day, and it's like your idiot ex-boyfriend slashing your tires when they find out they left the Elliott Smith record at your place and they've blocked their number when they try to retrieve it.
I wanted to like this movie because I was a fan of Odenkirk's work. Mr. Shaw with Bob and DavidI can't say he is. breaking bad And Call Saul A star's finest hour. The storyboard is crazy, but the concept itself is better presented in a 30-minute runtime than stretched out into a feature-length film at 70 minutes.
The writer's dilemma
Girlfriend's Day It starts with Ray Wentworth (Bob Odenkirk), recently divorced alcoholic greeting card writer working for AAAAA Greetings. Known for writing equal parts pithy and deeply sweet notes, Ray is a household name, and his contributions to the greeting card industry are legendary. However, as Cormac McCarthy once said, "If there's a career hazard in writing, it's drinking," and Ray tends to disappear into the pot more often than his name, resulting in severe writer's block and a healthy blackout. From AAAAA greetings to endings.
Ray moves in with his former, and now homeless, colleague Taft (Larry Fessenden). With a full view of the future through Taft, Ray knows he doesn't have much time to get his life back on track.
Advanced configuration
In the next three months Girlfriend's Day Timeline, Ray spirals into alcoholism. That is, until Ray approaches his old boss, Stuyvesant (Alex Karpovski). Stuyvesant announced that the state of California is holding a card writing contest for a new corporate holiday called Girlfriend's Day.
This is the one golden rule of the competition. Seasonal Greeting card workers are not allowed to participate, which means that Ray is the perfect person to do the job.
When Ray sneaks into the old AAAAA office to retrieve some supplies, he finds a mortally wounded Taft, who is bleeding from a stab wound. Waking up on the couch the next day after being beaten by an invisible assailant, Ray has hazy memories of the events of the night before.
After meeting a homicide detective named Ray Miller (Kevin O'Grady), he meets a beautiful woman named Jill (Amber Tamblyn) and discovers that she owns a greeting card shop. Sparks quickly ignite between the two soon-to-be lovers, and things start looking up for Ray on the romantic front.
Freshly minted as a muse, Ray Miller has a whole new set of problems to solve after discovering he's working for both AAAAA Greetings and Paper Hearts - two rival greeting card companies owned by Robert Gundy Brothers. Stacey Ketch) and Dillon (never seen on screen). Warned by Miller that he will prepare for Taft's assassination if he doesn't bend to the Gundy brothers' interests, Ray finds himself caught up in a grand plot to make sure Girlfriend's Day goes off without a hitch.
It was supposed to be a funny skit

Don't get me wrong, I've extolled the virtues of a fast-paced running time in the past, but only if the format makes sense for the story being told. In my mind, Girlfriend's Day It was an extended skate that housed a power plant. Mr. Shaw Universe, it's not unlike the gritty and realism of the 1994 "Love and Sausage" skit. Children in the hall.
Girlfriend's Day It's not without its charm, though. Narrated by David Lynch and illustrated by Steven Michael Quezada (provided)breaking bad) as Ray's crchetty landlord Muñoz, he's a comedy that works well enough with great chemistry between the leads, but leaves me wanting a little more, which in this case is more than enough to get the point across.
