Marvel's Latest What if Gives The Fantastic Four Disney Makeover (Exclusive Preview)

The first inside page is a title and credits page, with two lines of character images that parallel the Who's Who:

  • Mickey Mouse = Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic (also at the center of the team)

  • Minnie Mouse = Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman (the only girl on the team)

  • Stupid = Johnny Storm/The Human Torch (comic relief)

  • Donald Duck = Ben Grimm / The Thing (short)

The following pages parallel the structure of Fantastic Four #1 by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. In that issue, the front pages featured the four one by one, all living in midtown Manhattan and already which have their own powers. Their origins, being astronauts who were exposed and altered by cosmic rays on spaceflight, were then told in flashback on pages 9-13. The rest of the issue lived up to the cover, showing the Fantastic Four battling a giant monster controlled by the Mole Man.

The first drawn page shows the symbol of the four burning in the sky, echoing how Reed Richards released the flare to summon the other three in Fantastic Four #1. The citizens of Duckburg look to the sky in awe.

As in the original comic, the first hero we meet is the Invisible Woman. Minnie Mouse is watching TV with Clarabelle Cow, but when she notices the signal in the sky, she disappears.

Next comes The Thing. In "Fantastic Four" no. 1, Ben Grimm is introduced in a clothing store, wearing a thick coat to disguise his stony skin. When his true form is revealed, he goes on a bit of a rampage. Meanwhile, Donald Duck is simply ironing his clothes (which are torn from his transformation). However, when he sees the signal, he runs through the door, tearing it off its hinges along the way.

Next up, The Human Torch. Goofy says the flame is on while working on a car with Horace Horsecollar. He doesn't accidentally melt a car like Johnny Storm, but he flies past a barbecue match and gives everyone a helping spark.

That obviously drains the Stupid Torch's energy, but not to worry, because as he falls, super-stretchable Mickey is there to catch him. With the Fantastic Four assembled, the comic then teases an origin story yet to come.

Although he doesn't appear in this preview, Mickey's nemesis Pete will apparently play the role of the Mole Man. Who then is the version of this universe the ever-envious Dr. Doom, who blames his scarred face on his old schoolmate Reed Richards? Maybe Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney first creation (who was displaced by Mickey).

"Marvel and Disney: What if...?" Mickey and Friends Become the Fantastic Four” no. 1 comes out in print and digital on January 8, 2025.
