The Christmas crime thriller that Charlize Theron regrets

When you have a career as long and varied as South African actress Charlize Theron's, you're guaranteed to have starred in at least one or two things that didn't cut the mustard. She has had several certified stinkers over the years, like in 2005 live-action adaptation of the MTV cartoon Aeon Flux and the 1999 sci-fi thriller The Astronaut's Wife, but there's one film she personally bowed to.

In an interview with Esquire in 2008, Theron shared her feelings about the 2000 action thriller Reindeer Games, directed by John Frankenheimer. While on a characteristically candid Theron (as "Hottest" fans could tell you) didn't pull any punches and revealed that she thought the film itself was pretty awful, she also said she had "no regrets" for some pretty fantastic reasons. Reindeer Games is certainly not a great movie, with a 25% rating from critics Rotten tomatoesbut there are some things you have to love — especially if you're Charlize Theron.

Theron has no regrets, but thinks Reindeer Games must be terrible

Reindeer Games was not only critically panned, but also a complete flop at the box office with a worldwide gross of around $32 million (against a budget of $42 million). It's a pretty big loss and it's kind of a shame. Reindeer Games was Frankenheimer's last film, as he would die just two years after its release, and most people think of it rather negatively. Of course, it is one of the best movies set in the state of Michigan and it's obviously much better in the director's cut, but the average moviegoer wasn't impressed, and neither was Theron. She told Esquire:

“It was a bad, bad, bad movie. But even though the movie could have been bad, I got to work with John Frankenheimer. I wasn't lying to myself - that's why I did it. I mean, he directed The Manchurian Candidate, which is like the movie of all regret movies.

That's honestly not a bad way to look at things, because as an actor you're almost guaranteed to have some roles that didn't pan out for one reason or another. Over the years, Theron got to work with some absolute titans of the industry, including Sam Raimi, George Miller and Ridley Scott. Not every movie will have the staying power or fan base of something like this Tom Hanks "What You Do!"But at least she got to work with some really talented directors. And Reindeer Games is not that bad. Come on Charlize, you were in "A Million Days to Die in the West." Obviously it could get worse.
