Matthew and his older brother, johnnywas Hit and killed by a drunk driver August 30 during their bicycle ride in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. Johnny was 31 years old, and Matthew was 29.

The entire Gaudreau family was by Madeleine's side during her pregnancy, including Madeleine's baby shower in October.

Johnny's wife was present at the shower. Meredith Goudreauwho announced she was nine weeks pregnant with the couple's third child at a memorial service for the brothers in September.
