Squid Game Season 2 Post-Credits Scene Explained

Spoilers ahead for The Squid Game season 2 finale - stop scrolling if you haven't finished watching!

If you turn off The Squid Game as soon as the seventh and final episode of season 2 (titled "Friend or Foe") has started rolling its credits, you missed something! So what happens in the extremely short mid-credits sequence? Let's break it down, though we have to add: it's so mysterious that we're still not quite sure what to make of it.

The scene - what it really is so fast - shows several players entering a room and spotting that giant creepy doll, canon name Young-hee, seen in both seasons of The Squid Game during the deadly round of Red Light, Green Light that served as their first killer game players experience. But this time, as the players enter the arena, Young-hee is not alone. There is one an all new giant doll - looks like a little boy - seems to be facing her. Like Young-hee, this boy doll has sensors in his eyes, and as the camera pans away from the dolls, a traffic light is shown. As the camera lingers on the traffic light, the red light turns off and prompts the green to turn on. And that's it! The credits continue to roll.

This all happens so quickly, and it's impossible to make any definitive statements about Young-hee, her new friend, or who the players are who are watching these two dolls (they're only seen from behind, and the numbers on their overalls don't match to none of the main characters of season 2). But can we guess?

Doll Young-hee appeared in both seasons of Squid Game - and will probably return in season 3

Young-hee has become one of the most recognizable symbols of The Squid Game—along with the guards' uniforms and, perhaps, the Dalgona candies—since she first appeared in the game's first screenplay in season 1. At that point, neither did the audience, even protagonist Seong Gi-hoon (Lee Jung-jae) doesn't understand the stakes when Young-hee turns her back on the contestants to play the children's game "Red light, green light,” but those stakes are becoming apparent very, very quickly because contestants who don't freeze in time are mercilessly shot right there on the field.

After Gi-hoon defeats the games (in Season 1) and embeds himself in them once again in Season 2 (in an attempt to destroy them from the inside out), he finds himself playing Red Light, Green Light again—but at least this time, he knows the job. Thanks to his experience in the game, he is able to warn the other contestants that even twitching after the light turns red is deadly, but not everyone takes him seriously; before long, they realize that Gi-hoon is telling the truth. While he can save some contestants from certain death — pointing out that if they hide behind it, the sensors can't pick up any movement — Young-hee claims that there are many casualties during "Red Light, Green Light" and looks set to increase her death toll in the show's upcoming third (and final) season.

The fact that there is now two dolls means even more players will be spotted and killed. But it's also important to note that we can't say for sure when this scene takes place. For all we know, this is a flashback to an earlier version of the games. It was found that the frontman, known as Hwang In-ho (Lee Byung-hoon) played the games once and won. Could this be a flashback to that time period, when the Red Light, Green Light game took on a different form? Or is this something else entirely? We'll have to wait until season three to find out.

Season 2 of The Squid Game is streaming on Netflix now.
