Based on my extremely informal and unscientific research, 2024 was a really tough year for most people. So what better way to kick off the last 12 months than by spending New Year's Eve watching Wicked and joining the citizens of Oz in their rousing rendition of Nobody Pity the Wicked? If you get things right, you can even usher in 2025 on a note of determined optimism by belting out "Defying Gravity" just as the clock strikes midnight. More importantly, if you can't make it to the official screening of the singing film, you'll have a way to do so without ruining the viewing experience of everyone around you. (As opposed to what certain members of the "Wicked" cast. we would tell you, we here at /Film do not allow singing in the theater at any screening.)

That's right! The adaptation by director John M. Chu on the first half of the Broadway sensation and revisionist view of the world and characters of The Wizard of Oz is heading to the domestic market just in time to cap off this year-long container fire. "Wicked" turned out to be a hit no matter which way you cut it, becoming a huge success at the box office and is emerging as one of the main contenders in the current awards season. Universal must be feeling pretty good her decision to split Wicked into two films right now; with the first film set to run gangbusters on digital and home media, that should only help build further excitement for the second installment, which is now called Wicked: For Good. (Look, the /Film team almost got hit over the title that instead of "Wicked: Part 2," so it's best to just move on.) Best of all, "Wicked" will include tons of extra goodies as part of its home run. liberation.

If you have read (or heard) about that Wicked deleted scene where Fiero (Jonathan Bailey) and Bock (Ethan Slater) are shirtless and you find yourself turning green with envy (er, sorry for the phrasing, Elphaba), you might be in luck. Universal announced that "Wicked" will include several deleted or extended scenes as part of the domestic release, along with a Sing-Along edition of the film, a 40-minute making-of movie series and more. You can pick up a digital copy of Wicked from the usual suspects (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Comcast Xfinity, Cox, Microsoft Movies & TV) starting December 31, 2024. Those looking to add Chu's musical to their physical media collection can purchase it on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD starting February 4, 2025.
